I agree. Phyllis Coates was the best Lois Lane in my opinion. It is too bad that she didn't stay with the show. Her bound and gagged scene in "Night of Terror" had a great close-up.

As far as Noel Neill goes, I think her best bound-and-gagged scene was actually in the 1948 SUPERMAN movie serial, where a bomb is about to explode. The one in "Perils of Superman" where she was gagged and tied to the railroad tracks was great too.

Teri Hatcher had some good scenes. My favorite is "Dead Lois Walking" where she is bound and gagged in the bell tower.

I really don't know who would make the best Lois Lane now.

Of course! I just mentioned her earlier tonight. Liz Vassey would make a great Lois Lane!

Some of you may remember her as the actress who played "American Maid" (or rather the character based on her) from the short lived live-action "The Tick."

Conan O'Brien possibility
I just saw a preview for tonight's "Late Night with Conan O'Brien." They are doing a sketch where an attractive female audience member speaks "out of turn." Conan yells "Detain her!" and we see two security guards grabbing her out of her seat. We will have to see what happens.

No bondage. The security guards take her off stage and then we hear gunshots implying that she has been executed. The premise of the sketch was "debunking the myths of Late Night." Conan "reveals" that the show seceded from the USA in 1998 and is actually now the small independent nation of Latenightia for tax purposes. A female audience member doesn't believe him so Conan has her executed.

Lois Lane
> Yes, Courtney would make a great Lois! Actually, I like Courtney in anything at all. . . :)

Agreed, Courteney Cox's blue eyes would look great peering over the Gags that the Lois Lane role entails. The possible obstacle I see to my wishlist would be that if Hollywood wanted to go with a twenty-something Superman, they would also likely try to cast a twenty-something Lois.

Margot Kidder also made a good Lois Lane in the Superman movies -- it seems that that Hollywood hasn't made a serious misstep in its various TV and movie castings of Lois thru the years. Then again, casting the Lois part is pretty straightforward, whereas her co-star has to be convincing both as "Superman" and as "Clark Kent".

Re: Lois Lane
Terry Farrell was by FAR the hottest babe ever to play Lois Lane. I've seen Farrell in a couple of her erotic thriller scenes, and she is definitely the possessor of a pornbody -- nice womanly curves everywhere. Whereas Neill and Coates were kinda sticklike in comparison. Plus, Farreel has great eyes -- huge, luminous, very feminine. Really, she's gonna be hard to beat.

Pat, was there an episode of Deep Space Nine I missed? You mean Teri "Howie!" Hatcher, of course, & I agree with you completely. :-) (I liked her best early in *L&C* when she had her hair in that floppy pageboy. {sigh})

Agreed, but at the same time it seems that some leeway could have applied here. It WAS a big mainstream happening (and BTW, I didn't even watch this crap) and it appeared to be close enough to the "theme of this page" to be included. Hell, there's lots of things allowed that are far less "on topic." Believe it or not, my post was meant to be a constructive bit of fromadistance commentary.

Maybe, or maybe not. In my own case, I've been here since the beginning in 1996 and still try to check the site out whenever possible. I'm NOT bored by the repetition... always interested in NEW opinions/interpretations.

Curiously, your response to my posting (up to this above sentence) was reasonably polite and attempted to justify your actions, whether I agree with them or not. Why the above "your head up your ass" was added doesn't flatter, I don't think.

At any rate, thanks for your reply.

Oh well, maybe it's just me.....! :-)

I agree. The stuff gag is not truly a "gag" It is a symbol. It is a reflection of his dominance and her submission, and in that regard, it is sexy. Yes she can spit it out, but she doesn't. She chooses to remain silent. It's a different form of bondage, that's all it is. It isn't as good as a great gag, but its better than no gag.

Re: Lois Lane
Yes, I meant Teri Hatcher not Teri Ferrell. Hatcher was really memorable in an erotic thriller called "Cool Surface" in which she wore a white dress which was very short and very tight, straining desperately to hold in all the womanly goodness beneath it. (Later, she does a nude scene and we got to see why it was straining.) I've found a cap to the shot of her in the dress, it's kinda blurry but does make the point. It's linked to rather than shown because Terri's not in bondage in the shot.

I defy Coates or Neill to look anywhere near this sexy. (It wasn't allowed back in the 50s anyway.)

With the understanding that it's all ultimately a matter of taste and no one's going to come up with a rational reason why one form of bondage is "better" than another, I have to disagree on this point.

To me, a stuff gag is all wrong for DiD scene because it is technically consensual -- the damsel is voluntarily not spitting it out in a situation where it may be very much in her interest to do so (as in this instance, yelling out some clue to her location to the guy on the other end of the phone).

It's actually kind of demeaning to the damsel when you think about it -- would anyone expect a male captive not to spit out a stuff gag and yell for help at an opportune moment?

But I don't even like stuff gags in consensual scenes because to me they indicate less submission than real gags. There's a certain amount of bargaining implied here -- "You don't need to tie that gag in place, I'll hold it in my mouth, I promise." And bargaining isn't really submission.

The next step down that road is "being gagged by her master's will" which some RL couples engage in, in which the woman is not physically gagged but cannot make a sound without her master's permission. There are people who say that this indicates even more submission than wearing a gag, but I don't buy that one, either.

It seems to me that a damsel who is actually gagged and/or bound so that she is physically helpless in fact as well as in theory, has submitted to her captor's will to a much greater extent than one who is not, however steadfast her willingness to pretend gaggage and bondage.

To me, real submission means submitting to wear the gag, or the bonds, and all this "voluntary" stuff is just "topping from below."

That said, it's all still a matter of taste.

If you put Coates in that outfit, she'd do very well up against Hatcher. Hatcher was hotter in her prime, but her Lois days extended well past her prime. Coates had the whole package. She had a great figure, despite someone's comments that she was like a stick. She had a tremendous figure. It was covered up by period clothing. She emoted and played the damsel very realisticly, unlike Hatcher, who is not a great actress to begin with. All in all, Coates rules.

Tape over the mouth is actually much more realistic, too. When I hear of true crime stories where someone is silenced it seems to always be with duct tape.

Duct tape is easily purchased from a hardware store, and is simlply placed securely over the damsel's mouth. There is a physical danger that accompanies stuffing a cloth into a damsel's mouth, and that is getting the fingers bitten, which can be painful.

Coates is by far the best Lois on film. She came across as kind of a tough girl - one you wouldn't want to mess with. When she was bound and gagged, she looked pissed off and annoyed, which is very exciting. Too bad she didn't have more scenes.

VIP
I watched a rerun of "VIP" last night on TNN that featured a brief bondage scene. A lovely young woman was bound and gagged and stashed in the trunk of a car. She was a hotel guest, and the villains aho bound and gagged her occupied her room.
I recall that Fuzz had a Didclip of this scene on his Website, but didn't know the episode in which it occurred. Well, Fuzz, I can help you answer your question. The episode occurred during the first or second season, most likely the first, and if you can find out which episode TNN aired last night, on February 12, at 1AM PST, then you'll know its title.

I have to say, this is a very odd kidnap situation. So the bad guy kidnaps Blair, strips her to her undies (nice to look at, but why on earth did he do that???) to tie her to a railing to make a phone call, then gets her dressed again to take her someplace else. Although Kassie looks totally hot in her skivies, I can't imagine why, except to give us males a bit of eye candy, would he strip her down to make a phone call. I guess the same reasoning (whatever it was) that Jamie Luner got stripped to HER undies before being tied up on Melrose Place.
maybe it's a gesture on the part of the kidnapper to make the damsel even more vulnerable (but then, why dress her again to take her to the hideout?)

Jamie Luner was stripped because Rena Sofer was wearing her clothes and a wig to impersonate Jamie and to fool Michael. So at least there was a reason Jamie was stripped. The Blair stripped scene makes no sense storywise, since Mitch had no intention of assaulting her, just threatening Todd, who couldn't see Blair anyway since he was on the phone.

Well stated, Pat! As a general rule, a mainstream DID scene is not a "consentual" scene in any sense of the word, and ineffective, consntual stuff gags just don't cut it, IMO. While cloth OTM "detective" style gags are also often ineffective, they conceivably could be relatively effective if they are tied tightly enough. A stuff gag can be spit out shorly after being put in, and there is little reason that a damsel in a conventional DID scene would not do so in most, if not all situations.

I am also am not crazy about the way stuff gags look, and am also sympathetic to your other points concerning consentual scenes. However, but my comments directed to those points would probably not be appropriate here.

As for the best Lois Lane debate, I agree that Coates made a great Lois. However, she only played the role for one season, and had only one scene, albeit a very good multi-damsel one. Hence, I question whetether it is really fair to compare her to Terry Hatcher and Noel Neal both as Lois, and especially as a DID. Between, Noel and Terry, I lean towards Terry as the better DID. IMO, she had more diverse array of bondage scenes and a much better variety of gags. However, I have to acknowledge that a lot of it has to do twith the times in which they each played the role.

> I defy Coates or Neill to look anywhere near this sexy.

Aren't you being a bit biased there Pat old buddy ??

Do you have access to photos you could share of Coates and Neill in similar costumes ???

Besides, dress material like the one Teri's was made of just wasn't available back in the early 50s.

Not to mention that most DIDCAPS of Coates and Neill are grainy black and white photos from low res kinescopes, while Teri's are generally in color and much higher res captures.

Even the best quality black and white photo pales in comparison to a color version of the same shot.

It is like comparing the black and white photos of the beautiful Honor Blackman as Cathy Gale with the color photos of Diana Riggs as Emma Peel and saying Diana was better looking.

Compare the black and white last season of Honor and the following black and white season of Diana and it is very obvious that Diana was just trying to carry on what Honor pioneered, but without her physical attributes, same wit and chemistry with Patrick, but not the same kind of beauty as Honor.

The Encore Mystery Channel is now running the Blackman segments, the first Riggs segments [in black and white] should be following shortly, compare for yourself.

Rent 'Goldfinger' and see just how great Honor looks in color.

It is just like asking who was the best 'Big Man' in basketball, George Mikan from the 1950s Minneaoplis Lakers [the NBA rewrote the rules to end his dominance of the game], or, Shaq who gets mega international media coverage now.
