Sunday March 23 03:15:54 2003 Something cool from Ms. Christie |
I happened to pick up a copy of " The Man In the Brown Suit " by Agatha Christie recently. It's quiet a decent adventure mystery told by Anne Beddingfield, the detective heroine of the story set in the early 1920s.
About halfway through the novel, she's captured by the villian and his henchmen and they decide to leave her tied up until the next morning for questioning. Here's how it reads from page 194... " He called and two Kafirs appeared. I was taken upstairs. Despite my struggles, I was gagged and then bound hand and foot. The room into which they had taken me was a kind of attic right under the roof. It was dusty and showed little signs of having being occupied. The Dutchman made a mock bow and withdrew, closing the door behind him. I was quite helpless. Turn and twist as I would, I could not loosen my bonds in the slightess degree and the gag prevented me from crying out. If, by any possible chance, anyone did come to the house, I could do nothing to attract their attention. " She goes on to describe how uncomfortable the bindings make her and how in true adventurer grit ( shades of Nancy Drew :) ), she manages to free herself with a handy piece of broken window pane and make good her escape. Later, she recounts her misfortunes to an idle airbrained friend. To her amazement, her friend exclaims, " Why do these things always happen to you !? " she demanded plaintively. " Why does no one gag me and bind me hand and foot !? " Anne assures her being bound and gagged for a couple of hours or more would not suit her and that she was tired of the strains of adventure. All in all, not a bad read. Ms. Christie did quite well and I for one hope it will be adapted to a movie or TV production one day. That is unless, like the otherwise great recent adaption of " The Hound of the Baskervilles ", they decide to omit the damsel bound and gagged scene from the original Conan Doyle story. Dunno what possessed 'em to have her hanged, rather than bound by Stapleton. Oh well, that's artistic licence for you. |

The scene from the book was rewritten without the bondage. In the film, SZ walks down a street then disappears. Suddenly she reappears being dragged along by two men with a sack over her head. No bondage after that. |

Sunday March 23 12:44:10 2003 Riverworld scene |
There are a few scenes at the beginning of Riverworld that show a bunch of people being led around with their hands tied in front and with ropes connecting them to one another. A lot of them are guys, some are gals. There's also an arena fight scene that has a few slavegirls hanging around, but none of them appeared to be bound.
That said, it's a very good adaptation of the Philip Jose Farmer novel, and is a fine movie to watch. Looks like the pilot for a series, a series with excellent DiD potential, but I don't know that any series will come of it. |

Coming from a woman writer, that's a very interesting line. Does Anne's friend ever get into any adventure herself, or is she always envious of Anne? |

Sunday March 23 17:29:44 2003 Re: Something cool from Ms. Christie |
In answer to Mr. Jazz's question about Anne's friend having any adventures of her own. No, as far as I know it was the only story with those characters featured and her friend isn't nearly as brave or adventurous as her. Here's how Ms. Christie put it from page 203 to 204. I drove to the hotel. There was no one in the lounge that I knew. I ran upstairs and tapped on Suzanne's door. Her voice bade me ' come in '. When she saw who it was she literally fell on my neck. " Anne, dear ! Where have you been !? I've been worried to death about you. What have you been doing ? " " Having adventures ", I replied. " Episode 3 of ' The Perils of Pamela. '" I told her the whole story. She gave vent to a deep sigh when I finished. " Why do these things always happen to you !? ", she cried plaintively. " Why does no one gag me and bind me hand and foot ? " " You wouldn't like it if they did ", I assured her. " To tell you the truth, I'm not nearly so keen on having adventures myself as I was. A little of that sort of thing goes a long way. " Suzanne seemed unconvinced. An hour or two of gagging and binding would have changed her view quickly enough. Suzanne likes thrills, but she hates being uncomfortable. Oh, and that sucks about the TV adaption ommited the tied up scene. What is it with those buggers ? |

Stephanie Z has had a great career in avoiding the gag (if not the handgag). |

> To tell you the truth, I'm not nearly so keen on having > adventures myself as I was. A little of that sort of > thing goes a long way. " Very interesting passage. What's meant by Anne having had adventures in the past? Her dialog certainly implies that she's had them before. Is this her first true "dangerous" adventure, as in the first in which she was actually in any real danger, while others were just mild thrills? This her first detective adventure? |

As far as I know this is the only novel that featured the Anne Beddingfield character. I think Agatha spent the rest of her writing career more interested in the Miss Marple and Inspector Poirot investigations. |

Weeellllll...no and yes, respectively, I'd say. :) Total scene length was under two minutes, with our damsel visible for under 30 seconds of that. (Nope, I didn't edit out any of her shots, apart from a couple seconds at the very end of the rescue sequence.) At the same time: yeah, the director's varied choice of shots reflects a true dedication to his craft. Never before have I felt it necessary to grab 16 caps from a 30-second clip. |

It's on tonight, yet my TV Guide had the WB showing "Blade". The episode is "House of Fear"; can anyone confirm whether or not this is a repeat? |

Actually, what I meant was, does the novel ever reveal any of Anne's background? Or does it merely drop hints that she's an "adventurer", without expanding on them? I know this is the only novel to feature her, but even one-book characters are sometimes given interesting backgrounds. |

Actually, after checking out the WB's website, I got this the following: "When the Demon of Fear returns to seek revenge on The Charmed Ones, he manages to trick Paige into performing a spell that gives him powers to trap the Charmed Ones in the manor and use their own fears against them." Sounds like something could be up to me. The episode is titled "Sympathy for the Demon." |
