Sunday August 17 02:07:56 2003 Brilliant But Cancelled |
Trio makes "Brilliant but Cancelled" a regular series beginning in September. Each week features episodes of a show that the network feels was cancelled before it's time. A few shows on the roster so far are "Bakersfield P.D.", "Eastside/Westside", and "Gun". The series kicks off with a week of unsold pilots, some of which have never aired. Some that might have potential are . . .
"Beat Cops" (2002) about two bumbling cops. "L.A. Confidential" (2000) based on the film. "Fargo" (1997) based on the film, stars Edie Falco. "Sick In The Head" (1999) sitcom about a psychiatrist. "Rewrite for Murder" (1991) Pam Dawber plays a mystery writer who clashes with ex-con George Clooney when they're forced to work together to help save her struggling tv show. "Savage" (1973) Martin Landau as an investigative journalist and Barbara Bain as his producer. Directed by Steven Spielberg. If I'm not mistaken this pilot was released on home video about 15 years ago. Haven't seen it. "Black Bart" (1975) the further adventures of the sheriff from "Blazing Saddles". All of these will air the first week in September on Trio. Other "Unsold Pilot" weeks are planned for "Brilliant But Cancelled". |

Sunday August 17 02:26:58 2003 Some More TV Stuff |
The Starz Encore Group has a new long term deal with FOX for movies and series for it's various channels. So far three series have been announced. The Action Channel (Encore Action) gets "Time Tunnel" and "The Green Hornet. The Westerns Channel (Encore Westerns) gets "Big Valley". By the way, "Alias Smith and Jones" which Westerns aquired in a deal with Universal last year is still sitting on the shelf as is "Combat" over on the Action Channel.
TBS dumps "Lois and Clark" in September, replacing it with two hours of sitcoms. Hallmark has picked up "Matlock", "Little House On The Prairie", "The Lone Ranger" and "M.A.S.H." "JAG" comes to Hallmark in 2005. TV Land adds "Mr. Ed", "Bonanza" and "WKRP" in September. "Get Smart", "Batman", "Adventures of Superman" and "Charlie's Angel's" are off the schedule. TV Land's contract for "Charlie's Angels" runs out at the end of September. Soapnet has picked up "Dallas". Starts in September. And finally, USA and A&E will share reruns of "The District" beginning in 2004. |

What the heck are they thinking about over there in TV Land? Obviously those who make scheduling decisions have completely abandoned us. A talking horse over Lois Lane? |

Since TV Land changes their lineup on a monthly basis it will probably be back before too long. I believe "Adventures of Superman" is still airing on the Goodlife Network. Speaking of "Mr. Ed", years ago on this page someone mentioned a scene from this show. During the last season, for three or four episodes, Wilbur and Ed work for a spy agency. Supposedly Wilbur ties and gags an attractive enemy agent. Anyone recall this? |

Sunday August 17 10:54:05 2003 As The World Turns possibility |
I caught a preview for the upcoming week that showed a villainous-looking dude saying "tell Simon Green we have his wife". Simon's wife Katie is none other than Teri Columbino. Haven't seen any other spoilers on this so far. |

Not sure if there is a potential scene or not. Movie trailer doesn't show anything. Movie does not come out until April 2004. |

The problem here is the actor who plays Simon bolted from the show, so unless they recast, there will be no Simon on screen. The other real possibility here is there's a nutcase doctor who's been killing people. Emily, Allison and Susan are on to him. Someone could get the treatment here ... One quick note: The guy's name is Simon Frasier, in case anyone cares. |

Sunday August 17 16:56:11 2003 Oh, brother... |
...do we need to engage in some historical revision here, or what?
As those of you who've been around here a really long time know, it's been preached as gospel-largely, I must admit, by evangelists such as myself-that there have been only two actresses that have won Academy Awards for performances incorporating bondage, namely Susan Hayward (Best Actress for "I Want to Live!" in 1958), and Angelina Jolie (Best Supporting Actress for "Girl, Interrupted" in 1999). Further, I must also acknowledge, I have recently, in a database entry, expanded this scripture to embrace the dogma that only three other bound actresses have even gotten nominations. Boy, was I wrong. For starters, how could I have forgotten that Ingrid Bergman, shown briefly chair-tied, according to a database entry, in 1974's "Murder on the Orient Express", won Best Supporting Actress for that role, making her Bound Oscar Winner Number 2 and shoving Jolie down to Number 3? And that isn't the only honor she's posthumously due, apparently. Instead of Dorothy Dandridge, Bergman and Olivia de Havilland should share credit as the first bound Oscar nominees, having both been up for Best Actress in 1948-Bergman for "Joan of Arc" and de Havilland for her straitjacketing in "The Snake Pit." (They lost to Jane Wyman.) And as a leisurely Sunday afternoon whiled away over at the IMDb has revealed, there have been a lot more than five actresses who got Oscar nominations for movies in which they were bound, including some I had no excuse missing. So as not to again lead the flock astray, here they are: Bergman and de Havilland, as described above. Dandridge, "Carmen Jones," 1954, Best Actress nomination; lost to Grace Kelly. Samantha Eggar, "The Collector," 1965, Best Actress nomination; lost to Julie Christie. Diana Ross,"Lady Sings the Blues," 1972, Best Actress nomination; lost to Liza Minnelli. Linda Blair, "The Exorcist," 1973, Best Supporting Actress nomination; lost to Tatum O'Neal. Madeline Kahn, "Blazing Saddles," 1974, Best Supporting Actress nomination; lost to Bergman. Jessica Lange, "Frances," 1982, Best Actress nomination; lost to Meryl Streep (but won Best Supporting Actress for "Tootsie"). Meryl Streep, "Postcards from the Edge," 1990, Best Actress nomination; lost to Kathy Bates. Catherine Keener, "Being John Malkovich," 1999, Best Supporting Actress nomination; lost to Jolie. Ellen Burstyn, "Requiem for a Dream," 2000, Best Actress nomination; lost to Julia Roberts. Renee Zellweger, "Chicago," 2002, Best Actress nomination; lost to Nicole Kidman. In addition, Eleanor Parker was nominated for Best Actress in 1950 for "Caged," in which she was gagged but not bound; the Oscar went to Judy Holliday. Ironically, her tormentor in that scene, Hope Emerson, was nominated for the Best Supporting Actress award for her performance, but lost to Josephine Hull. Also, Jodie Foster won Best Actress in 1988 for "The Accused," in which she was handgagged. I've fixed the errant database entry already, and given Bergman her "props" in hers. So this will serve mostly as a reference for those of you who care about this sort of thing. For those of you who don't, well...hey, we can go back to talking about who should play Wonder Woman. How about Charlize Theron? She's probably going to end up in the database for her upcoming performance as recently-executed Florida serial killer Aileen Wuornos, whom, thankfully, she doesn't resemble at all. If she can pull that one off, she can do anything. |

Sunday August 17 21:55:32 2003 It slices, it dices, it juliennes |
For those who saw the McMILLAN and KOJAK sequences for the first time today on HALLMARK, there was a bit of editing in both. A brief shot of Susan Saint James bound, blindfolded and gagged that should have come in about the 60' mark (preceding the one shown of her wriggling out of her wrist bonds and removing her facial accessories) was cut. And the first quick shot of Pamela Hensley bound and gagged after the handgag was likewise lifted ... she would have been shown as Andrew Prine opens the bathroom door preparatory to laying in wait for Kojak. |

I have the dvd of Mystery Men and while it does have deleted scenes, they establish personal lives (the heroes' workplaces, for example) but show no gag scenes for Claire Forlani. Sorry. That would've been nice... |
