Depends on what you mean by "short while". Some of us have
100's of hours of tape. A daunting task to switch to DVD
even with the proper equipment.

Didly, these guys remembered the 100 year old commercial about the "Spies A'Poppin'" board game. Stick around; you will learn plenty. Good to get some new "blood" here.

The Pacifier apparently pops
I haven't seen it yet, but that's the word on the new flick (and suggesting a likely full-treatment scene for Brittany Snow), according to screenit.com. However, the information is a little ambiguous, so I'm simply linking to the site here so you can check it out for yourself until one of us sees the flick and reports on it.

How about Stefanie Powers in the "Murder is a Drag" episode of "Hart to Hart"? She is kidnapped while attending a costume ball dressed as an antebellum Southern belle. The criminals are masquerading as caterers, so she is initially tied in the back of a ctaering truck, but not gagged. Her screams for help attract the attention of one of the criminals who admonishes her for being so noisy, and then produces a cloth and cleave-gags her.
There are several closeups of her face with the gag in her mouth as she attempts to free herself. She is shown chewing contemplatively on her gag.

Another scene that comes to mind is Amy Steel's scene in an episode of "The Powers of Matthew Star". She is captured by the villains in one scene, and in the next scene in which she appears, she is discovered by her boyfriend, the eponymous hero. She is bound and gagged while standing up; her hands are tied behind her back, and she is cleave-gagged with a black cloth, and is jumping up and down and making very indignant "mmph" sounds through her gag.

Funny you should mention that. I finally decided to spend the buck$ and get a VCR/DVD recorder a couple of weeks ago. After using and then taking back a Panasonic DMR-E75VS ($299)- Wouldn't play DVD+ or DVD-RW+ disks- and then a JVC ($349), - where do I start?- I wound up with a Sony RDRVX500. Let me say it does an OUTSTANDING job copying tapes. Simple to use, it can record/play any DVD-+ disk and so far no problem using Memorex or Ridata disks. Also, even in 6 hour mode, I can't tell any difference in quality from the original tape. (That probably speaks to the crappy quality of the tape itself.)

There are a few gripes. For some stupid reason, Sony decided to put somewhat pointy edges on the corners of the remote instead of rounding them off. If you hold the remote in your hand for any length of time, one of the bottom edges tends to dig into your palm.

Also, when playing a DVD, if you play around with the FF, Pause, and Play buttons too much the DVD will "freeze" and the only way to break it loose is to shut the unit down.

Last thing: When playing a CD-VCD, if you use the FF button, and then hit play, the damn unit will go back to the start of the first chapter all over again. I haven't contacted Sony about these problems yet, but the simplest solution to me is to just buy a cheap DVD player (I highly recommed the Panasonic DVD-S27UPS from Wal-Mart.) and use it to play disks and leave the Sony for recording.

I hope this helps some of you guys.

To well-known operatic tune:

Suck it, blow it, rub it on the floor.
Stretch those nostrils, exercise your jaw.
For really cute expressions and to seal the damsel's gob,
Nuts to balls and cleaves, for sticky tape will do the job!

Best bit of tape gag work I know is by the damsel in "Der Sandmann." In fact, many of the best tape scenes are European, with snug, really sticky tape and no wimp-out backing panels.

Just an observation on tapes from going through the Zinger collection - anything over 10yrs old shows obvious signs of deterioration (some won't play at all without picture breakup) - and even stuff a little over 5yrs old is showing its age. If you see 'white flashes' occasionally while playing an old tape - the magnetization of the metal oxide coating is breaking down and the tape has about a year to live.

It occurs at about the 54 minute mark, so yes, but I would say don't get your hopes up too much. This is one show where they don't do many reprises, usually they just launch into the new action.
This has been a hell of a month in spanish-land! I know it's an unusual month but I'm giving serious thought to switching to a cable package with 30 spanish stations and 50 english stations. English TV hasn't had much to offer lately no matter what your barometer is.
The link below is a good way to learn a little bit more about most of these shows, including the actresses (you can see a little head shot just to keep track of them). It's got pretty much all the shows we've discussed here lately.

Thanks for the link ... but, as noted here earlier, the
ep in question, "False Profit", airs on the
13th south of the border.

Also, later in the episode, Sue goes for a ride in the trunk with what appears to be hands tied in front with cable ties.

My error! Wrong unit. That should be the PIONEER DV-270. At about $65, it's nearly perfect, and that's judging it against units costing $100 more.

One great thing about Major John's
& Raffish's DVDs
Have the select Chapter buttons which save you from FF,
and take you back to the Menu.
Easier for the Collector to grab a particular scene, than FF'ing and REW'ing through a tape..

Now, a certain character with "100's of hours of tape" will likely point out
"You do realise I have to run these "100's of hours" through an editing program, which would be a daunting task?"
Agreed.

But on the optimistic side,
if a bunch of fellas all start creating DVDs like this and passing them around, a collector may find that good chunks of, or entire tapes, not needed anymore.
Leaving him with a much smaller group of scenes to transfer over.

That's part of it, of course. Personally, I'll be looking
at a DVD recorder with hard drive, to record the tapes
there first.

One good thing about the modern age is that you can
usually find on-line manuals for any unit you are
interested in, and study it prior to purchasing.

To a certain extent. Some of us kind of dropped out of
the trading scene due to lack of time. We'll see how it
develops. Of course, it may be as the Major implies,
if it's not done if fairly short order it won't be
worth bothering with.

LOL. Priceless, G. Thanks a lot for the quick updates and quality capping - this is a DiD scene for the record books, kids.

Realistically, the argument is moot. Your VHS tapes will degrade if you don't start to copy them. Once they are on DVD, you can always copy them to your hard drive and edit them there. You don't lose quality in a digital to digital copy, you do lose it when copying vhs to vhs.

Apologies if this has been posted ,but i know there has been speculation as to possible scenes in this movie .It goes on general release in the UK next friday ,and todays news of the world shows a cap of serena scott thomas and Rumer willis ,bound and cleavegagged with black cloth .We know from a cap posted here that there is also another scene with a separate damsel ,bound and tapegagged ,so all in all this one is looking like a winner .
Hooray for Hollywood.

Indeed your right, when I read this I popped right out to the local 24-hour garage to buy a copy and have a look. This confirms there is a potentially great scene for these two ladies. The Mum's gag looks "interesting", almost like it's got a knot in the middle or something under the gag. However, it *could* just be the poor print of the paper and turn out to be a black splodge in the worst possible place!

In past trades I have had the person sending the tapes into Canada use the first 15 minutes for a movie or tv program and then start the real recording, also have them label it with what the tape starts with. Has worked well so far.

That's true eventually. The fact is no one really knows how long a vhs tape will last. I've got vhs tapes that were recorded in 1980 and they still look fine. In fact I have some non DiD stuff on TWO INCH videotape reels that still looks as good as the day it was recorded.

I've worked in television for the past 15 years and from my experience, a lot of how well a videotape holds up depends on how well the tape is stored and to a lesser extent, the quality of the tape itself.

Last year in preparation of dumping our archives to dvd we did some research and
found speculation that some dvd's may last as little as 5 years. Something to do with the dye used in making certain dvds. Apparently it's safer to go with a company that actually manufactures their own dvd's (we went with Memorex) rather than a company that buys the dvds from a supplier and simply slaps their name on the box. And since it's been a year, I can't recall which other companies make their own discs. Should be easy to track down on the net.

Anyway, even though I'm transferring my DiD stuff to dvd, I'm still going to hold on to the master tapes for a good while.
