Wednesday November 14 20:52:02 2007 Here's a little theory. |
My theory is about the prepondernece of white hankies used as gags in old black and white serials. I think it has to do with the fact they stand out very well in B&W. Admittedly, handkerchiefs were more common in the thirties and fouties than today, but it does make me think. Anybody have any info about this? Or any ideas of thier own about pristine white hankies? |

Lady lying face down on a cot or bed. Only see her right hand and the leather cuff holding her hand down. Occurs at 35' or 37'. No gag. At 47' with better light, we see her again with better light but only her right hand again. Only a quick shot of the leather cuff. |

I think everyone here is forgetting that she did have a gag scene in All My Children .... so she did have the treatment before .... when she won the daytime emmy ... In that scene she was bound in a basement to a post and gagged very effectively .... |

Handerchiefs weren't just "more common" in the thirties and forties, they were virtually a required part of the daily costume for all adult males. If you weren't a laborer on your way to or from your place of work, you were expected to be wearing a suit and tie (with hat), with a crisp, white hankie in your jacket pocket. The bottom line is, hankies were ubiquitious. What else would the gangster or thug-about-town use to gag a damsel? To test your theory about gag contrast, I suggest a systematic survey of serials, by genre. I'm betting you'll find *Western* damsels usually run afoul of the ubiquitious calico bandana, but urban damsels encounter white hankies. :-) |

No gag in that one. Which was too bad, considering there was a wedding or something like that going on upstairs. Gag would have been logical. But alas...a decade and change had to pass for her to finally be mouth muffled. (Not counting Scooby Doo, cuz nobody here does, I'm sure) Gag Spelled Backwards |
