Thank God for the 1960's, 1970's and 1980's. They really produced some nice scenes. It is also good that these series are still really popular and they are still re-run ad nauseam.. not that I really mind them...

A heck of a lot better than 'Las Vegas'

This is an example of something I noticed and wrote about here a while back; tying up a DID without actually showing it. I forget the other example, but I saw the VM episode and the "effect" the director was going for was showing her point of view in the trunk: total darkness. If you watch closely, she struggles with the ropes and you sense a dark trunk but you don't see the ropes on her wrists you just pick up the scene when she can see, that is, when she pulls the hood off (then we can see) and the ropes are already off.

Unfortunately, like a lot of TV these days; quick cuts, impressionistic scenes and conceptual imagery. It seems very rare for a DID scene to be longer than a few seconds anymore. I can't think of one in recent memory; a while back "Parting Gifts" on Angel was good, as was "Two Weddings and a Funeral" on 7 Days. They were quick cuts also, but at least there were a good number of them.

What's wrong with that?

Can anybody help direct me to a cap of Virginia Mayo B&G in Walter Mitty? It's a blink-and-miss-it scene, and I blinked (dangnabit).

If it's done well and is a good scene by other standards often discussed on this page, then nothing. But the example of Veronica Mars was sited as bad because there was virtually no scene at all; just an "impression" of one. Implied scenes are a drag because the plot led to a perfect opportunity for one (and there was one) but then there was no payoff; like a shot of a DID from behind where you know she's gagged but they never show her face. Sure, impressionistic imagery and quick cuts work for the director and the story, but most people here are interested in scenes you can actually see.

I think the complaint is not so much about the quick cuts that are so common now; it's more about the fact that there are almost no long scenes at all anymore, which would be nice to have occassionaly, to balance the whole thing out.

What's a long scene? The Collector (movie), Terror Among Us (TV movie), The Avengers "Gravedigger" (TV series), The Saint "Shirley Eaton episode" (TV series), Cheaper To Keep Her (movie), Angel "Parting Gifts" (TV series), Dragnet 69 (TV movie) to name a few.

A new category?
The new Premiere magazine (2005 movie preview issue) in one of the "behind the scenes'' columns, says that a script is being written for a movie based on last year's Vanity Fair article on a group of Maryland teenagers who made a shot-for-shot remake of "Raiders of the Lost Ark'' (with, naturally, a suburban Baltimore cutie playing Marian (the Karen Allen role).
This upcpming movie will be cool because it will be a making of, with hopefully a lot of set-ups and planning of shots, including the two bondages.
And the intriguing notion of a professional actress playing an mateur playing a professional, all of them bound and gagged.
Of course, if the thig ends up in turnaround hell i just aggravated my carpel tunnel for nothing.

I rented The Avengers "Gravedigger" episode last week. It was the first time I had ever seen it and I was impressed. It was an excellent scene. In my opinion this scene was worth all the hype that I've read about it.

"The Mean Season," which I've mentioned before. We see Mariel Hemingway sitting in the back seat, but we see her from the neck up..and when Richard Jordan reaches to touch her, she moves away like she's tied. And then after she's been found off-screen, we see her with a bandanna around her neck...folded like it had been used as a gag. You have to wonder...are there and deleted scenes out there we don't know about?

Also, when she's reunited with the protagonast at the climax (so to speak) she has red marks around her wrists. (What the people on CSI refer to as "ligature marks" & us less intense types call "rope burns".)

Bah. I was there, the scenes now days are just as good
and more plentiful. There's a concept that back then
it was chock-a-block with scenes. Far from the truth.

Joy Giovanni tied up on WWE Smackdown
"WWE Diva" is tied up and put intot he trunk of a car as part of a storyline this week on Smackdown, which airs on Thursdays at 8 on UPN. Here's the exceprt from the spoiler, as the show is taped on Tuesdays.

"This is a bunch of crap," says Kurt. "It's disgusting how you kidnapped Joy." Kurt opens the trunk of JBL's limo, and lo and behold, Joy is tied up! Medics come out, put a gas mask on Joy, Big Show comes out to comfort Joy, then cleans house in the ring, chokeslamming almost everyone.

"Excess Baggage" script
In case any of you are interesting, I have here a link to the script for the movie "Excess Baggage" with the famous self-bondage scene involving Alicia Silverstone. The directions in the script are quite interesting...

http://www.seemaxrun.com/ebintro.htm

click on "read the script"

here's a sample:

"Emily laughs softly as she tapes her ankles together."

"Ankles taped, Emily hops to the edge of the trunk to rummage for more bondage paraphernalia..."

"She hangs up and, working fast now, because time is running out, gags herself -- a real gag: stuffing, knots, the works."

Enjoy.

Not to mention dabbing the back of her neck with antiseptic when she gets back home. Sore spot a result of blow or tight gag knot?

Don't get too excited just yet! The difference between RAW(Live) & SmackDown! is that SD taped. Sometimes things are edited out or cleaned up before the show airs. Most likely this will air because of the ongoing fued of Angle/JBL/Big Show... but if it doesn't you can thank Vince & Steph!

on 24??
I caught the nice scene on the season premier of 24, with new girl Kim Raver tied & gagged with her dad in the van, but I didn't know that the show also was going to air the next night! Did anything noteworthy happen? Was the situation with Kim continue? I haven't heard any talk about the second day's episodes but thought I'd ask anyway.

No. You didn't miss anything. "24" is turning into a real putz fest with Lukas Haas and William Devane seeing 10 times as much action as we got from Kim Raver. They could have easily made that role of the programmer a woman, but I guess there's too many female characters as it is.

Enjoy.

If that's what the script called for, then why did Alicia end up with such a lame gag (clear tape sorta cleave)? A "real" gag with stuffing and knots would've been the scene of the decade! Very disappointing to read what should have been...

Hi Dave - Hmmm...good idea, but more fun to simply explain that the
