I've been predicting this for years. There's no magic boundary between bondage porn and a mainstream film that features a lot of bondage imagery. Some of the stills that have come out of films like Hostel 2 look like they came right out of a commercial bondage video -- Heater Matarazzo suspended naked, upside down and gagged, or Bijou Phillips in that black ballgag and corset, bound to that chair, or the "waiting room" for the victims with their gags and leather straps. This strikes me as what Lloyd Simandl is doing with his Czecksploitation films like Bound Heat and so forth ... deliberately exploring the seam between mainstream films and bondage films. I've got a term for it, honoring the longtime leader in commercial bondage films, Harmony Concepts: the Harmony-ic Convergence. A Harmony-ic Convergence film could be a mainstream film with a lot of bondage imagery, or a commercial bondage film with a strong storyline and something like characterization. |

The ultimate example of this, IMHO, are the Ginger films from the early 70's(GINGER, GIRLS ARE FOR LOVING, and THE ABDUCTORS). Discovering THE ABDUCTORS on rental VHS as a teen blew my mind back in the day. |

So tired of scenes (especially in U.S. soaps) where the "helpless" woman pulls her wrists out from behind her back almost before her rescuer has put his fingers behind her to "free" her. |

No offense, but I strongly disagree, especially with the two examples cited; I think there is a clear line. There may be a difference between commercial films in that some make an attempt to create a coherent storyline and have better production quality, but I feel I always know when a film is mainstream or not. I think many people, the majority, also know the difference and if it's hard to describe and turns out to be a "I know it when I see it," kind of thing, I have no problem with the debate. But I do have to state that, the crossover film, the gray area film, the one that is clearly mainstream, but also clearly chock full of sexy, high quality, intelligent BD has not been made to date. Though I do think it is possible to do, I also think it is unlikely or it would have happened already. Funny thing is, I'm okay with that because I pretty much like the unexpected, unrelated to the fetish scene, scene, I just think it's better (sexier) that way, which is why I like this site, bcause that's what this site highlights. |
