Melina Kanakaredes is chained to railroad tracks with a train approaching in the episode of "Providence" entitled "Rescue Me". Scene is a black and white dream sequence at the beginning of the episode. |

I really wish Melina would find some trouble on "CSI: N.Y." This potential damsel avoided the gag on "Guiding Light" and has been an untouchable on TV and movies, either by bad roles for us ("Providence") or just no luck ("CSI" and the Robert DeNiro movie she was in). |

IMHO, if you asked the average Joe or Jane on the street what they think of when they hear the phrase 'Damsel in Distress' they would respond with one of the following: 1) Princess in a tower (not necessarily bound) 2) Girl tied to the railroad tracks 3) Girl tied to a log at the ol' sawmill 4) Girl tied to a pole - dragon bait 5) Unwilling harem girl ---- An "archetype" example of #5 would be Princess Leia as Jabba the Hutt's captive in "Return of the Jedi". Other likely mainstream archetypes: 6) Girl tied to pole by cannibals/savages, or as a sacrifice to the volcano god (or equivalent). 7) Joan of Arc - An iconic DiD figure in classical art. |

This was a rather lengthy scene; she was bound and gagged twice by a man impersonating a sheriff's deputy, as I recall. |

The line is full-size standard gauge, the engine a genuine 1860s Mason 4-4-0 (same decade as the first theatrical railtie!) pulling an equally genuine period luxury coach. Fleming, evidently a railfan of taste, describes it as "the most beautiful train in the world." Now, the Baltimore and Ohio has a working 1850s Mason, which starred in "The Wild, Wild West" movie, but you'd have to take it to Cuba to shoot that scene today. Cuba still has many veteran steam locos, most of them heavily modified and rather tatty, and they work hard for a living in the sugar cane harvest. The Caribbean setting, of course, is just like that in Fleming's book. Actually, Bond is told it's Mary Goodnight on the track, but when the train runs over "her", it's revealed to be a dummy. Scaramanga was trying to extort information from Bond. |

I'm pretty certain that to the average Brit, a "damsel in distress" is no more than a lady stranded at the roadside by a broken-down car, or stuck with a malfunctioning washing machine or photocopier.
The more educated might get as far as a prisoner in a tower, not necssarily bound. To get into our frame of reference at all, you'd have to ask specifically for archetypes of women tied up. |

I wouldn't get too excited because the bound Mary Goodnight turns out to be a mannequin placed there by Scaramanga - if I remeber she is bound in the forest watching as Bond jumps about all over the train (a miniature train that takes people around a plantation I think) trying to stop it before it runs over the dummy Goodnight. |

I certainly wouldn't be averse to a new movie changing that bit and tying the real Mary to the track, though. :-) > miniature train No way. It's the genuine full-size 1867 article (Fleming refers to the engine as "Highland Light class"), lovingly restored and priceless as befits a deranged millionaire. Bond unforgivably wrecks it with Scaramanga aboard at the end of the book. |

Thursday October 27 12:40:06 2005 Hostel and Show Me |
These are two upcoming films. The release dates are not finalized.
Hostel looks to be very "Saw"like in nature. The website offers a tease, while the trailer shows the situations. Only a male is seen in a chair, but there are hints of other ladies in the situation. Here is the link for everything from yahoo. http://movies.yahoo.com/feature/hostel.html The second is Show Me, where a woman is taken by a couple of teens. There are two spots for info on this one. The trailer is here. http://www.wolfereleasing.com/showme/trailer.htm While another trailer and a couple images are at the website. http://www.showmethefilm.com/ |

Thursday October 27 13:33:48 2005 great track ties |
Over the years I've found the odd cap from some great track tie scenes like the "Phillips and Wahll" radio show promo, and a couple I found at the old "Perilous Predicaments 2" group from the "Hollander's video". Does anyone remember seeing that? What was it exactly? a music video? To jog your memories, or if you have these, there was one cap of a Did with short blonde hair being tied by a bald villain, and a head and shoulders of the girl laid out on the track with ropes just below her shoulders. Does anyone have more caps of this scene that show her full length? Or the "Phillips and Wahll" scene? Where there's one there may well be more. |

The film company of Peter Jackson's re-make of "King Kong" has agreed to extend the theatrical release's length from 2-1/2 hours to 3 hours.
That *should* be lengthy enough to ensure that a Naomi Watts scene echoing Fay Wray's shouldn't end up as a DVD-extra. |

I happened across a cartoon in a Playboy from the 60s.
It's a villain gloating over a damsel he's just tied to the tracks. He's casually loosening his tie, and he says something like, "Train? My dear, there hasn't been a train along this line for years." |

IIRC, and I could be wrong because the memory is kinda hazy, tonight's "Without A Trace" had a promo about a woman kidnapped being into bondage games. And tonight's lead is supposed to be Korean. Heather Thomas is tied to a chair in VERY tight jeans (we're talking a hint of camel toe) in the B-movie "Cyclone." No gag but the chair tie is imaginative, as Heather does some first class writhing as she's being given electric shocks to make her talk. |
