Friday October 21 21:21:55 2005 Re: Adhesive tape |
I recently inherited (literally) a roll of the kind of tape probably used to gag the damsels in the famous "Okavango" double kidnap scene.
The original package and label are missing, as I believe some of the tape has been used for its true purpose of surgical strapping, but I think it is the stuff manufactured by Elastoplast (who make all kinds of medical dressings)and sold under that name even outside the UK. Some of us ancient diehards still call it sticking plaster. It's a creamy off-white fabric, three inches wide, quite thick, with a different, anti-fraying, weave at the edges. No tearing it off, obviously; good sharp scissors or a knife are needed to cut it to length. A narrow dark yellow line is printed along the centreline of the non-sticky side. The adhesive, off-white like the cloth, is on the OUTSIDE of the tape on the reel, so that it can be rolled straight onto the patient. It sticks tenaciously to the reel, but has quite a low tack when first applied to the patient. However, after a few minutes it has fused to the skin and is hard to pull off, leaving a thick sticky residue and a smarting sensation. The slow grip is probably why the bad guy smooths the tape over Michelle Scarabelli's face so lovingly. Unlike duct, parcel, insulating and so many other tapes, this is specifically designed to stick well to human skin for a long time, and should therefore make a reasonably effective gag. The fabric is not as stretchy as the name would suggest, but it does yield and conform perfectly to skin contours. The lip shapes clearly visible in the Okavango and a few other rare scenes indicate that this, or a very similar, tape was used. I think Camille Coduri wore a flesh-coloured variant of this material over her mouth and eyes in "A Touch of Frost". She looked almost faceless, quite weird. |

The girl in The Black Panther also had the same flesh colored tape. Too a passerby it would appear that she wasn't gagged at all because of the way it conformed to her face, but looked real good up close. |
