The scene in Rampage is a mega-loosie. The best thing you can say about it is that the DID and the rope
were in the same room.

This 1974 book was originally a cheap paperback original, disposable pulp meant for bored housewives to pick up at the spinner rack in the local drugstore. And yet thirty years later it still has a rabid following. That pretty much says it all. This novel is simply one of a kind... a very, very dark and terrible kind.

If Mendal W. Johnson had not (alledgely) drank himself to death, he could have been the American DeSade. It's that ruthless.

What made you think the word "adventure" was GUARANTEED
to appear in the description? It doesn't. That's why
your search failed.

Even the tiniest amount of experimenting, like just
searching on the title, would have told you that.
Instead, you had to waste my time and everyone
else's whining and claiming the search doesn't work.

It would appear so. Now, if it was a tight OTM or snug medical tape, I might steel myself to watch this, but its being only a cleave lets me off the hook. :-)

In case anyone is interested, someone on Amazon is auctioning off a first print edition SIGNED by Mendal Johnson that he had given to his parents.

I completely agree with your analysis. This is not for the faint of heart. I actually stole this book from a bookstore in Boston many years ago just because I liked the picture on the cover..the young lady bound to a chair and gagged...also because I was too embarassed to purchase it legitimately (and statute of limitations has expired so I can admit it now). The book is extremely well written as the children almost seem to become possessed in a way..not satisfied with simply tying their babysitter they experiment with torture..rape..and her ultimate gruesome demise.

What makes you say it still has a rabid following? Are there still big sales or something? Has Hollywood come calling?

Heartbeat scene was a real bust
Such a pity ,cute actress ,perfect set up ,but in the end it was the old police bust in cant find her ,hear knocking in a closet ,open closet door to a 2 second shot of bound and gagged damsel .Another minor 2 second shot later in the episode of a forty something maid bound and gagged with 2 putzes ,but overall strictly one for the completist ,if you seen the cap of the chick ,you've seen the scene.
Major disappointment.

Thats not an auction. Its simply what the bookseller prices it at. If you want it thats the price you pay.

The main scene was admittedly short but there was also a second scene earlier in the episode when Ward's charector is first kidnapped, hands tied and blindfolded in the front passenger seat of her car. Longer but no gag so some people still won't like it.

If nobody else plans to i'd be happy to do a Database entry but i will need to view the ep again first.

Very few people have read the book, and I doubt that it was any kind of runaway financial success. But the novel has left an indelible impression on the few us that have
stumbled across it over the years. It's reputation as a "Holy Grail" among fans of extreme horror is deserved.

As far as Hollywood, no sane motion picture studio would come towards this book with a ten-foot bargepole, and any remotely faithful adaptation would instantly be banned as obscene.

The copy I bought was a 1st edition hardcover, printed in England.

Because it's been out of print for decades, but still is infamous enough through word of mouth to have a small, but strong, cult following. Thats pretty impressive for a book thats been out of print for so long.
Plus everyone who reads it has the same impression, it really affected them.

> Has Hollywood come calling?

Yes, twice actually from my online research.
There are two screenplays that were written years ago in two attempts to film this book, but the author's family refused to sell the rights because Johnson was one of those authors who didn't want films made of his work.

From the preview it looked more like they had to get each other out of the straitjacket using their mouths.

I bought my hardbound copy in a University bookstore in the USA. They had a small New Fiction rack. I read the dustjacket blurb, speed-read a few pages, & bought it on the spot. My chemistry & humanities homework suffered that night.
