Most of the German words contain one of our notorious Umlauts ö, ä or ü. I could do a search for the German-related entries and replace the letters in the correct German way (with oe, ae and ue). Most people from Germany sarching the DB (I suppose there are not many of us anyway) would find out sooner or later how to search for these words. |

We could do that, and that would be the proper way to handle it if we want to go to strict 7-bit ASCII. I don't know how big of a deal that is, most browsers use the same 8-bit encoding for extended character sets. Whatever we decide, it will probably be easiest for me to handle it by directly manipulating the underlying text file. This is a simple search and replace, and can be done all at once. First we'll have to get an idea of which ones got screwed up the first time. If someone wants to make a list of those for me, feel free. There shouldn't be too many letters that are German, French or Spanish accented characters. |
