Monday September 15 00:29:20 2008 Site Update |
This week we present a new section on Sword and Sandal movies, which focusses especially on how slavegirls should be treated in movies. We did it because there's a trend afoot for everyone and his cousin to be making sword and sorcery movies of late. Soon we will be swamped with them. And let's face it, on the evidence of how they've done in the past, Hollywood can REALLY use some free advice on how to handle slavegirl imagery. And I'm just the man to provide it. Image below is from "Taur the Mighty Hunter" a feeble Roman peplum that has this inexplicably beautifully designed gag in it. SOMEBODY was paying attention, even if the director, the producer and the scriptwriter weren't. |

I remember this scene so well, because it was aired as a syndication mini-series and the promo showed Jane B&G in an extreme closeup. The promo aired at least a month before the mini-series aired. The scene had just about everything, including the gorgeous Ari Myers from "Kate & Allie" fame who I was hoping was going to share the scene when they started running into the boiler room, but knew she was likely the villain. Love the expression on Jane's face when Ari pulls the gun, then you get the pan shot from her legs up to her head where Ari tightens the gag and says "sorry, Catherine, but the contract insisted on no recognition." Then the parting words, "sorry, Catherine. I really did like you." |

I would guess that it must have been editorial direction, although it is very much a guess, and so is this: The idea perhaps was that it made things more dramatic for the "average" guy looking at the magazines to imagine the women screaming than going "Mmmm!" (no gags) and more likely to buy if he could see all of the woman's/women's form(s) (hands tied behind or outstetched). As I recall there were three or four artists who did a LOT of the covers for the "Men's Sweat" magazines. (Mort Kunstler and Norm Saunders are two names that float to the milky surface of the magic eight ball's memory surface, but don't bet the farm on accuracy.) It could be that they just liked the scenes that way too. Only thing I remember for sure is that just about the time I got old enough to buy those magazines, they started to disappear at the newsstand. All part of the conspiracy against me, I tell ya! |

The promo aired at Was definitely available as a VHS - that's the way I saw it in India when I was in college....and there was something great about the way Ari pulled the OTM gag back tight causing JAne's head to arch back.... |

Well, your speculation beats mine. It does explain how they could miss the appeal of gags while avoiding the unappealing (to me at least) hands tied in front bondage. It might take a bit more imagination to see how much more terrified a woman would be whose screams for help or of terror could not be heard because she's gagged. Also, I notice that almost all the women in the mags have bright red lips. Might be some subtle stuff going on there, too. > As I recall there were three or four > artists who did a LOT of the covers for the "Men's > Sweat" magazines. I mean, if hands behind is so obviously superior in terms of revealing womanly form, why did it become so common in movies and on TV shows? > Only thing I remember for sure is that just > about the time I got old enough to buy those magazines, > they started to disappear at the newsstand. All part of the conspiracy against me, I tell ya! Hey, I missed them COMPLETELY, ditto the detective mags. DOH! |
