unknown German western
I was wandering if anyone could help me with a scene. This might be a long shot. It's a western maybe from the 1960's and German I believe. The scene involves a woman with dark hair captured by bandits in a cave. There's one piece of dialog that stands out. She cries "You Murderers! You filthy Murderers!" then one of the bandits quickly cleave gags her. Later she's struggling wildly and spots a knife. She then rolls to it to cut herself free. Ring a bell to anyone??? I thought it might a Karl May German western "Karl May Der Schatz" but I wasn't sure.
Thanks in advance.....

That doesn't happen in the movie. If you are referring to tank girl. She never puts it on her mouth nor dances her around...

Record number: 6046

Title: Die Banditen vom Rio Grande (1965) aka The Bandits From The Rio Grande
Medium: Movie
Actress: Maria Perschy, Gerlinde Locker, Ellen Schwiers

Description: Dubbed into English version of a German contemporary Western. Please go see the review of this film on imdb. It is relevant to previous discussions on the Discussion forums.

Three beautiful school teachers, one blonde and two dark, are kidnapped by bandits while working in Mexico. They are dressed in tight fitting khaki coloured trousers and shirts.

While the blonde is dragged off to be molested, her two dark haired companions are left bound and gagged in the safari style tent where they are being held. The two are seen tied to they're camp beds with rope and gagged over the mouth style with packing. They struggle and mmpphh mightily while being tied up.

These scenes are quite short but well enough lit. They take place in the middle-ground. We only really see one of them bound and gagged in shot, but I strongly suspect that the original cinema version would have shown both of them.

Meanwhile the blonde teacher is seen outside a cave, her arms bound to her torso with rope.

First the two in the tent, and then the third are rescued by a doctor who has been living and working with the bandits.

This movie airs fairly often on one of the local cable channels. I watch only the scenes with the bound and gagged ladies. I'll watch for the bandage they wrapped around the ladies' mouths underneath the duct tape. I wondered why three actresses consented to being gagged with duct tape wrapped completely around their mouths; now I know.

I went through the video back and forth and couldn't see the bandage. Okay, maybe I saw a little bit, but how do we know it's bandage?

There's a different uncut version of that scene where it does happen. I've seen it. Not sure if it's in an uncut version of that movie or just the scene in general, but I saw it before.

It is evidently some material that is being used as a barrier between the adhesive side of the duct tape and the actresses' skin and hair. Removing duct tape that has been wound completely around a damsel's mouth would inflict serious damage to her hair, damage that might take weeks to heal or necessitate intense cosmetic work to repair. With stringent production schedules and the actress' physical appearance being integral to her occupation, these obviously aren't viable options. Therefore, if an actress is to be gagged with duct tape wound completely around her mouth, some sort of safeguard must be employed in order to prevent physical damage to her skin and hair and adhere to production schedules.
The three actresses could just as easily have been gagged with a strip of duct tape across each of their mouths, but the director decided to infuse the scene with some verisimilitude. A dastardly villain who gags a damsel typically would have no regard for the physical discomfort or inconvenience concomitant with wrapping duct tape completely around her mouth; he simply wants to gag her as effectively as possible. The villains who bound and gagged the three female members of the household were hardened criminals, and in real life, the three ladies would most likely have been gagged by hardened criminals in this manner.

And here comes my theory:

This "safeguard" (in this case, bandage) is used in a similar way as a multi-layer tape gag or an OTM cloth gag, right? It's wrapped around the mouth and head. Then comes the wrap-around tape gag.

If this happens, then the adhesive part of the tape never reaches the actress' mouth, since it sticks on the bandage. Therefore, the scene in "Ulee's Gold" is merely a simulation of a multi-layer tape gag scene, reminiscent of the Leelee Sobieski scene in "Joy Ride" (although they didn't even use tape there).

Am I right, or completely, utterly, wrong?

If you look at the 3 gags, Biels is different from the others. The other two the tape is a single wind all the way around, and if you look at the mother the tape bulges a little when it reaches the side of the head. There portion of the tape over the mouth doesn't conform to the lips at all. Biel is shown being taped, which sells the idea that the 3 were all tied the same way, except her gag has multiple layers, is wrinkled in places and conforms more accurately to the shape of her mouth.

My guess is that for the mom and the younger daughter lengths of tape were made up with a strip of paper down the center leaving only enough adhesive on the edges to stop it from sliding down. Because Biels gag was to be applied on camera They probably covered her mouth and hair with something first and then taped over it. I'm guessing if we ever saw a closeup of her it would be obvious what they did, which is why we never see her close. So ironically a gag that looks faker in closeup probably looks more realistic in long shot.

Also it's quite possible that Biel was the only one they could practically gag that way. The laws on younger performers probably prohibit anything like that on the younger daughter and as the mother is the one seen in closeup you you would need something comfortable enough for her to wear it for several hours.

Soaps
Hostage situation right now on As the World Turns. Blonde Alison (not the original hottie from a few years ago that did scenes with Peyton List) tied back to back with guy. No gags.

Older, yet still hot, females Barbara and Emily held at gunpoint but not bound.

On "One Life to Live" the Cramer gals are running around knowing Mitch is after them. Blair, Starr and Kelly. I haven't seen the return of Melissa Gallo yet.

Except that the scene only lasted a few minutes, if even that. :-P

Perhaps they just decided to go all-out on Biel for the hell of it. She could've been too mouthy off-camera or something! The look that she gives her captor right before the camera pans away from her is priceless and adorable (it's in the eyes).

You're completely, utterly right. This is an interesting speculation and very plausible explanation of the procedure for filming a scene in which an actress, who will most likely wear her hair long, will be gagged with duct tape wrapped completely around her mouth. More importantly than the duct tape adhesive never reaching the actress' mouth, it never reaches her HAIR; duct tape adhering to the actress' hair has more repercussions than duct tape adhering to the actress' mouth.
In order to achieve verisimilitude, the bandage or paper strip must be cut to the correct width so it won't be visible underneath the duct tape, and the duct tape must be adroitly applied so that it adheres to the minimum possible amount of skin and hair. When it is removed from her mouth, the actress experiences minimal discomfort.

Indeed, you are right. :)

In order to make it look realistic, you wrap a bandage or something that will cling, but not be adhesive to skin/hair underneath. In Ulee's Gold, it's a gauze bandage underneath the wrapped duct tape. I usually use gauze for my shoots. It can be wrapped fairly tight on a lady over the hair without it sticking, but it does cling to itself. Then I carefully tape over it. I let a little bit of the tape stick on the face so it won't slip. And after the set is done, I cut the gauze and tape carefully, allowing the lady to pull the tape off slowly or quickly as they prefer.

I am certain that in all cases in the movies, they do something to protect the ladies' hair, etc. because there are scenes that have to be shot afterwards...

The Jungle Girl and Me
I invite everyone to visit my website to read my story, "The Jungle Girl and Me: My Secret Bondage Obsession." Basically it's a memoir devoted primarily to my two different lives, the first as a normal-appearing, respectable physician; the second as a person who has very secretively devoted a great deal of my life to a fetish centered around images and fantasies of women who are bound and gagged. In my narrative, I attempt to find answers to questions that have puzzled me for nearly my entire life: How and why did this obsession with bondage begin in me? Why me in particular? Why this fetish in particular? And why do thoughts of bondage provoke sexual arousal?

I invite any readers to e-mail their comments, and welcome anyone interested in corresponding and sharing experiences.
