Friday December 28 04:51:40 2001 Database |
As mentioned on Discussion, back up and running. I'll have some notes to go over with everybody later.
Oh, and Asian's precious Red Team is not only in the DB, it's in there twice. I'm too tired to deal with it: Record number: 4577 Title: Red Team (1999) aka Crimson Code, The Medium: Movie Actress: Cathy Moriarty Description: Stephanie Dobson (Moriarty) has a nice cleave-gag scene towards the end as she's released from a chair, then dragged by the bad guy thru the woods. Good close-ups. Record number: 6006 Title: Red Team (2000) Medium: Movie Actress: Cathy Moriarty Description: Ms. Moriarty first has her hands cuffed behind her, and is later tightly cleave-gagged, around the 78' mark (without commercials). |

Brian R: Got it, thanx. |

Friday December 28 11:57:26 2001 Notes from the Fall |
I made a raft of notes concerning things I noticed while I was fixing up the Database. I'll go over things in a series of messages, to make replying easier. Some things will be posted to Discussion as well, as they are general messages for the users.

Friday December 28 12:13:30 2001 Notes Part 1. |
I noticed at least one of the editors was severely trimming out storyline context from the entries. Sometimes this is appropriate, but a bit of story is good for two reasons. One is to give a feel for the overall scene, and whether the user will enjoy it. The other is to help identify scenes for them, in grail searches and such.
An example: Description: Episode: "The Doctor is Out" The A-Team travels to South America in search of Murdock's psychiatrist. They take along a woman who claims to be his sister. Hannibal knows she's a phony, though, and leaves her tied to a tree when they head into action. She's not amused.

Friday December 28 12:16:25 2001 Notes Part 2. |
One of the editors had a habit of changing any episode title that had "Part X" to "prt X". I couldn't figure the rationale, it only saves one letter and is much less clear, especially for the non-native English speakers among us. I changed all those back.

Friday December 28 12:18:14 2001 Notes Part 3. |
This is a question:
Description: Episode: Big Bang Theory, prt 2 (3-33)<BR><BR>Her hands are tied behind her back to the leg of a small sink in a laundry room. Tightly cleave gagged. Great close-ups and struggling. Was that really in Part 2? I thought that was in part 1 of that cliffhanger ending. |

Friday December 28 12:20:34 2001 Notes Part 4. |
I assume these are the same:
Record #6392 Title: The Finder (2001) Medium: TV Movie Actress: Unknown At The Moment Description: This movie will air on Wednesday 12th December in Australia. The commercial has a few shots of an attractive blonde woman gagged with duct tape. Get those VCR's rwady! Record #6420 Title: Finder, The (2001) Medium: TV Movie Actress: Anja Coleby Description: Description: Great scenes, Rebecca Castaldi (Coleby) handgagged and dragged away from her car. She is then handcuffed and gagged with duct tape. Great mmmphing as she is dragged from her captor's van and into his house. "Speculative" entries should not be placed in the database. It just causes confusion later, when people are ready to put the real one in. I'll remind the populace of this. |

Friday December 28 12:24:34 2001 Notes Part 5. |
This:
... is not a legal puncuation mark. If you mean the elipsis, indicating missing text or passage of time, the mark is . . . (.) four dots for the end of sentence. The ... has become popular for a sort of stream of conciousness style of posting on message boards. I say not only regular posters puttin them in, but also editors adding them. I cleaned all of them out, 90% replaced by commas or periods, the rest either removed altogether or replaced by an actual elipsis. |

Friday December 28 12:31:20 2001 Notes Part 6. |
I see that one of our correspondents (I'm pretty sure I know who) didn't like to put spaces after his punctuation, so we had stuff like this:
calf booted legs.Serious screaming and writhing ensues.A tad heavy for UK prime time TV of the period! Much editorial time was spent fixing those, and still there were many in there like that. I corrected all of them. When you see someone persistently doing weird things like that, LET ME KNOW! I can take action to prevent further occurences. |

Friday December 28 12:33:18 2001 Notes Part 7. |
Another question one:
Description: Episode: Push It (1-3)<br><br>This episode had a scene where guest star Ms. Behr was bound and gagged.<br><br>Ms. Behr's character is wearing a tight black outfit. Her wrists are bound behind her back, ankles tied and a thin black cloth cleaves gags her. She's shown sitting in the back of a van. I remember this being in the two-hour pilot, so episode 3 doesn't sound right. |

Friday December 28 12:34:58 2001 Notes Part 8. |
Someone changed all the entries from Friday the 13th from:
Actress: Robey Actress: Louise Robey Isn't she listed as "Robey" in the credits of the show? |
Brian R |
Friday December 28 12:38:13 2001 Notes Part 9. |
Record #6344
Title: Memphisto waltz Medium: Other Actress: jaclyne bisset Description: chloroform scences<br> What is with some of our foreign correspondents and lack of capitalization? I need to make a tweek to the posting software to check for that, and bounce the entry ahead of time. Again, let me know when such things happen a lot. |

Friday December 28 12:39:47 2001 Notes Part 10. |
"alot" is not a word. Don't use it yourself, change it if you see it while editing an entry. I did a search and destroy, 78 occurrences replaced.

Friday December 28 12:43:04 2001 Notes Part 11. |
The title of the Pamela Anderson series was all over the map. I think I went with V.I.P. aka VIP for all. I tried to regularize many of the titles.
Also, one editor was changing things like "The Master" to "Master, The" and another editor was changing them the other way. Don't work at cross-purposes. Since the first way has the backing of the IMDB, so I went ahead and did those changes. I don't really care, you guys come to a concensus, and do it consistently. |

Friday December 28 12:44:24 2001 Notes Part 12. |
What's up with this?
< Actress: Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker, Kathy Najimy < Description: They're playing three witches who are tied to posts and burnt at stake (luckily, the latter isn't shown). No gags, short scene. --- > Actress: Thora Birch > Description: Thora Birch is first handgagged by Najimy, I believe(but I could be wrong) in a closet, and is later tied to a chair. No gag, but she does manage to insult Midler and struggles quite a bit. Same movie, one scene completely removed and replaced with another? Did the first one not actually appear, or did the editor somehow feel it should be removed? I combined the two. |

Friday December 28 12:45:41 2001 Notes Part 13. |
This was actually in and entry:
If anyone is interested, the description for the Laura Herring/Sunset Beach entry (#1944) can be augmented with some of the below details. When you are cutting and pasting from Corrections, make sure you get rid of the ancillary comments. |

Friday December 28 12:47:43 2001 Notes Part 14. |
> Actress: Kelly Ripa
> Description: This sequence took place in the early 90's before Kelly's days on Regis. Many good scenes of Kelly bound and gagged. First with arms behind back and ankles tied (and the tight blue cleave gag). Later, she is bound and gagged to a chair. Sequence lasted a few days with many closeups of Kelly's pretty gagged face. Several editorial passes were made on this entry to fix grammar and spelling, yet no editor checked to see if it was already *in* the database. OF course it was. Always check old TV/Soap entries. |

Friday December 28 12:49:01 2001 Notes Part 15. |
Don't use <p> to create two lines of space. That's an abuse of the tag, which is supposed to have a closing tag </p>.
Use <br><br> |

Friday December 28 12:53:54 2001 Notes Part 16. |
> Actress: Elizabeth Ashley, several extras
Several unknowns Several unknown Let's come up with a consistent policy for on this. I guess I lean towards the third. Also, the proper way to list multiple actresses is to separate them with a comma. So: Actress: Actress 1, Actress 2 Not: Actress: Actress 1 & Actress 2 |

Friday December 28 12:59:36 2001 Notes Part 17. |
This showed up a lot: "approx."
I went ahead and spelled all those out. Also, no such word as halfhour or quarterhour. I changed all those to 30 minutes or 15 minutes, seemed better that way. I don't like the use of acronyms or abbreviatons. Especially AOH, OTM and B&G. This screws up the search feature. I replaced many of those. |

Friday December 28 13:01:20 2001 Notes Part 18. |
Grammar chuckle:
". . . this terrible movie trapped in ivy . . ." How did the movie get trapped in ivy? There are lots of those, when you're editing an entry, read if over and see how it sounds. |

Friday December 28 13:05:06 2001 Notes Part 19. |
At least one editor spent a lot of time adding this to TV series:
Description: Episode unknown I question the usefulness of that, but I went ahead and put them back in anyway. However, one editor was changing episode titles to add quotes around the title, and another was busily taking them out. I didn't honor those changes unless something else changed as well. Again, let's not work at cross-purposes. I suggest you guys come up with a sample TV entry, and I can put it on the posting page or something. |
Brian R |
Friday December 28 13:07:21 2001 Notes Part 20. |
Title: Prisoner aka Captive Women; Prisoner: Cell Block Ha
I'm sure the Ha was supposed to be H. I also didn't find any indication that Captive Women was an alternated title, but I didn't remove it either. |
Brian R |
Friday December 28 13:09:02 2001 Notes Part 21. |
I found a few, not a lot, of people putting web links in their entries. If you see them, remove them on sight. We know how likely a link is to be valid in a month or so.
I wiped out all I could find. |
Brian R |
Friday December 28 13:12:21 2001 Notes Part 22. |
I don't like the term "putz". Besides just sounding dumb, it's an insider thing to the Discussion page. The database is supposed to be a stand-alone feature, outside users (especially non-native English speakers) would likely have no idea what was being said.
I did a search and replace on that, it now say "guy" everywhere. Those who care will know. |
Brian R |
Friday December 28 13:15:33 2001 Notes Part 22. |
Ok, that's all I have for now. There are a few things in my notes list that I can't remember why they are there.
As always, the intent is not to beat up on my volunteer labor, but to actually try and lessen the load, with things that I can do to help prevent repeat problems and to keep editors from tripping over each other. Commentary, critism, additional gripes *you* have as long as we are talking about it are welcome. |

Friday December 28 13:21:05 2001 Re: Notes Part 5. |
> This:
> ... > is not a legal puncuation mark. If you mean the elipsis, > indicating missing text or passage of time, the mark is . > . . (.) four dots for the end of sentence. According to the on-line dictionary, ... is ok for the ellipsis. In journalism school, we were taught . . . was proper. At any rate, much over used in the database entries. |

Friday December 28 13:24:45 2001 Re: Notes Part 22. |
> Ok, that's all I have for now.
Oh yeah, one more. I see a good deal of time was spent correcting entries where people left the default TV Series checked for Medium. Should I take the default setting out of the form, and force the users to pick one? |
