Re: Editor's Review & Findings: Record number: 1124 Title: Perils of Pauline, The (1947) Medium: Movie Actress: Betty Hutton Description: Somewhat comic look at silent-screen heroine Pearl White, played by Hutton. The first instance of bondage, about 20 minutes into the movie, contains a rather offensive element. Portraying White as a live actress early in her career, Hutton appears in blackface as a slave maid, running onstage to warn her master of Civil War Union forces approaching. Behind the curtain afterwards, she pulls her hands out from under her apron to reveal them bound, as a result of the clumsiness she'd shown in a previous role. About 20 minutes later, after she's been discovered by Hollywood, there's a memorable one-minute sequence of re-enacted clips from the famous serial, intercut with humorous signs for the audience. Hutton is shown lying on railroad tracks, her hands tied together in front and roped to stakes beside the rail-her ankles are tied together and apparently restrained, but to what isn't shown-struggling furiously as a locomotive rapidly bears down on her. Just before it gets there, the screen goes white, then flashes the message, "One moment please to patch film". A few seconds later, she's tied standing to a tree in a burning forest, followed by a "No Smoking" message. Next she's spreadeagled in chains-shown only from the waist up-as a rack of spikes lowers itself onto her, as a baby starts to cry on the soundtrack, which brings the message, "Will lady with crying baby please take it outside!" The sawmill episode follows, with Hutton bound to the log with rather thick rope. Just as the whirring blade starts mussing her hair, the clip ends with, "Ladies please remove your hats". Finally she's shown on her side, hands tied in front, apparently bound somehow to a vertical timber in front of her, amid cans of black powder and a case of dynamite with a fuse quickly burning down as she struggles. About ten minutes after this sequence, Hutton and her male co-star are shown filming an episode in which they're tied standing back-to-back in the basket of a balloon, but rather loosely-which comes in handy when the balloon gets away from the ground crew before the pilot can sneak aboard. Incidentally, Hutton is shown roped and cleave-gagged on the box of some video releases of this film, but is never gagged in the movie. ________________________________________________ Record number: 6565 Title: Perils of Pauline (1914) Medium: Movie Serial Actress: Pearl White Description: The archtypical damsel-in-distress Pauline Marvin (White) is menanced through twenty episodes by the murderous villian Koerner (Paul Panzer) and his nefarious henchman. I've seen caps from three episodes where she's in bondage. In one scene, Pauline is lying on the floor of a cave or mine, bound and gagged. There's another scene of her tied up in the back seat of speeding roadster as the henchman speed away with their captured quarry. Lastly, she's tied to a post with lots of thick rope. From what I've read, none of the stereotypical scenes that appear in the 1947 similarly titled film (menanced by a buzzsaw, tied to the railroad tracks, etc.) occur in this serial. ========================================== Get to rest in a moment. |

Record number: 6565 Title: Perils of Pauline (1914) Marked as related to this: Record number: 1124 Title: Perils of Pauline, The (1947) Medium: Movie "Civil War Union forces approaching." Marked "Movie", which IMDB agrees. "Union" forces related to Civil War is a common US term. Say with certainty this entry by a US poster, and scene related to US Civil War. So, "lying on the floor of a cave or mine, bound and gagged." "tied to a post with lots of thick rope." "Pauline coming to the rescue for tied up fellas" etc etc "No gag scene, she chair-hops over to tied up fella on bed" etc etc Okay, should have either saved tape, or taken notes Sat. But that popular Bollywood one aired Sun, so did scan and back into VHS machine. So rough favoured: Perils of Pauline (1934) "A famous scientist and his beautiful daughter travel to Indochina to find an ivory disc" Recall hearing "Give me the disc!" afew times during taping. Mentions "Indochina", so similar to that Singapore? Hong Kong? Civil War that Pauline going through. When airs again, going to gather credits. Pretty sure they going to match up to (1934) one. Re: "Chair-hop" Perils of Pauline (1947) tonight really Shadow of Chinatown (1936) Have entry for it. Record number: 10562 Title: Shadow of Chinatown (1936) Medium: Movie Serial Actress: Joan Barclay Description: In chapter fourteen, Joan is tied hands behind her back in a chair. No gag. Scene carries over to chapter fifteen. __________________________ Two serials with Oriental themes airing around same time, with buggered Air-scheds the problem. Both entries fine. |

Entry Under Review: Record number: 3144 Title: Mysterious Mr. Wong, The (1935) Medium: Movie Actress: Arline Judge Description: Laughably inept murder mystery with Bela Lugosi, complete with Hungarian accent, playing a Chinese crook bent on possessing twelve coins which once belonged to Confucious. Peg (Judge) gets in the way and winds up tied up by the bad guy. No gag, though. ______________________________________________ Arline Judge aka Bella Grifiths aka Arlene Judge Scene will be sent to the "War Room" in St Louis, US. Any standard US terms for this can be brought up later. Taking crack at it for now: 1st scene: Don't figure "rack" really applies, going by the positions the fellas all restrained in. Perhaps lie down "stocks"? {Rough} "First restained sitting back to back with fella on a lie-down stock table. Wrists spread, one wrist secured in the foot stock, other wrist chained to the head of the table" Some squirming so two can maneuver a telephone to their chained wrists to call for help. Fella taken out and put in another stock device, leading to 2nd scene: "Lying down by herself, arms both chained rough forearm-elbow area, up to head of the table. Ankles likely in foot stocks Have an idea of appropriate term? Let us know. Thanx |
