My Favorite Spy (1942) |
Day: Saturday May 31 2008 |
Time: 4:00 PM EST |
Channel: TCM |
Title: My Favorite Spy (1942) Medium: Movie Actress: Ellen Drew, Jane Wyman Description: Not the Bob Hope film. Band leader Kay Kyser plays himself as a nebbish recruited by Uncle Sam to infiltrate a ring of spies; he is to do this by acting unpleasant and un-American (all played for laughs, mind you, at the height of WWII), to attract the spies' attempts to recruit him. His wife, Ellen Drew (not in on the secret), leaves in disgust. The night she picks to return, the feds have G-Gal Jane Wyman posing as Kay's wife while he meets the spies. Jane takes Ellen to another room to explain things; from behind, she pulls down her coat, pinning her arms, and hand-gags her. Later, Kay goes to check on her; he hears much mmpphh-ing coming from a closet, and opens the door: there she is, sitting on a chair, hands bound behind it, ankles tied to the legs with scarves, gagged with dark cloth over her mouth, squirming, grunting, and glaring daggers. He does his best to explain, and leaves her. Later, Jane goes to check on her -- Ellen has freed herself, and grabs Jane, who now finds herself bound in the chair, gagged with a light-colored scarf over her mouth. Ellen smirks and pushes Jane's preposterously large hat down over her eyes as she leaves. Later, Kay is trying to lead Ellen from the bad guys' hideout; still not trusting him, she screams for all she's worth. Next thing you know, her head, arms, and upper body are wrapped in black cloth, tied with white rope. Kay spends the last part of the film carrying her over his shoulder this way (giving her a sharp spanking at one point, which only quiets her for a second). Her struggles and muffled screams are about as energetic as any I've ever seen. You'd be safe rolling tape at the 45' mark. The running time for an AMC airing is listed (repeat: "listed") at 93'. Adding some taping time beyond the listed end's not a bad idea when dealing with AMC or premium channels, whose schedules are not as rigid as broadcast and cable networks and stations. |
Silverado (1985) |

Time: 11:30 PM EST |

Title: Silverado (1985) Medium: Movie Actress: Patricia Gaul Description: McKendrick's henchman set a trap for Emmett (Scott Glenn) and Jake (Kevin Costner) by taking his sister and family captive, thereby luring them into a trap. Kate Hollis (Gaul) and her family are gagged but not otherwise bound, for some nonsensical reason known only to the film's director. Short scene takes place about three-quarters of the way through the film. |
Scooby-Doo (2002) |
Day: Saturday May 31 2008 |
Time: 8:00 PM EST |
Channel: ABC Family |
Title: Scooby-Doo (2002) Medium: Movie Actress: Sarah Michelle Gellar Description: At the beginning of the film, Daphne is shown being carried under the arm of an airborne "ghost." Her arms are tied in front with jump rope. She's not gagged at the start, but later in the scene her green scarf is used as an overgag. The scene lasts several minutes, but there are only three or four quick shots of her gagged face before the gang comes to the rescue. The animated title sequence also has a brief scene for Daphne, hopping along bound hand and foot (wrists behind, rope around her upper torso) and gagged over her nose with blue cloth (per a couple of her scenes in the original series). The title sequence wasn't shown in the NICKELODEON airing. *Note*: the DVD contains "behind-the-scenes" footage. There are several shots of the scene which were deleted from the movie. Included are several good closeups, with Ms. Gellar looking right into the camera. There are also a couple other extended angles of her gagged. |
Pony Soldier (1952) |
Day: Saturday May 31 2008 |
Time: 9:45 AM EST |
Channel: AMC |
Title: Pony Soldier (1952) Medium: Movie Actress: Penny Edwards Description: Emerald Neeley (Ms. Edwards) is captured by Crees, along with a man. Around the 25' mark (in the AMC airing I saw), she's shown being freed by hero Tyrone Power. She's inside a tent at the camp. The scene is very brief. She's bitgagged, and Power is just cutting her wrist bonds behind her back when the cut is made to the tent. She removes the gag, and that's pretty much it. Later, about 70' in, recalcitrant members of the Cree nation grab her again and whisk her off. We see her again bitgagged (appearing to be made of leather, secured by thongs or cords wrapped around the ends) and bound wrists behind. After a long march, they bind her ankles over her flowing skirt, and build a fire to immolate her. Power, a Cree chief, and a Cree boy save the day. This scene runs about six minutes. |
Troy (2004) |
Day: Saturday May 31 2008 |
Time: 8:00 PM EST |
Channel: AMC |
Title: Troy (2004) Medium: Movie Actress: Rose Byrne Description: She plays Briseis, who is shown about fifty minutes in sitting bound with her wrists behind her around a pole. Achilles releases her. Although the scene where she is bound is very brief, throughout the rest of the movie her wrists are shown with the bruises and even the scars left by her bindings, suggesting that she was bound very tightly and cruelly for a prolonged period of time. Alas, we don't get to see it. Still, a very unusual sight in most movies. |
Darkness (2002) |
Day: Saturday May 31 2008 |
Time: 3:00 AM EST |
Channel: Sci-Fi Channel |
Title: Darkness (2002) Medium: Movie Actress: Anna Paquin Description: Near the end of the movie, Regina (Anna Paquin) is tied to a chair (hands behind her back) and teased by her captor. Scene begins with a nice close-up of her bound hands. After a bit of chit-chat, the bad guy produces a thick white cloth and puts it over her mouth. The scene is cut at that point, and after a few moments we get a BEAUTIFUL close-up of Paquin cleave-gagged with the cloth. Unfortunately, the captor removes the gag almost immediately, and leaves around her neck. After some talk with the villain, he decides to cut her loose and she runs to save her father. As she runs, she unties the cloth from her neck. She is wearing jeans and a tank top. |
Hostage (2005) |
Day: Saturday May 31 2008 |
Time: 2:30 PM EST |
Channel: USA Network |
Title: Hostage (2005) Medium: Movie Actress: Serena Scott Thomas, Michelle Horn, Rumer Willis Description: The first scene occurs early in the movie and it's of the blink-and-you-missed-it variety. A woman who was being held hostage by her crazed husband (or boyfriend) is found by Bruce Willis tied in the corner with a rag shoved in her mouth. Wrists are tied behind. She has already been killed. 6 minutes in. 21 to 22 minutes in, there are 3 seperate handgag scenes with Michelle Horn. Closeups, wide eyes and all that good stuff. 30 minutes in, Michelle Horn is bound with packing tape back-to-back with her little brother and her ankles are taped together. Not gagged. A very brief flash of her as the security shields come down over the windows 32 minutes in. Little brother is in the scene, but since they are tied back to back, you don't really see him. 34 minutes in, you see them roll off the bed together in an effort to escape by breaking the bong she has hidden under the bed and using the glass to cut the tape. It doesn't work, the bad guys hear the bump and come running. They do seperate the both, but her ankles remain tied. 44 minutes in, we see 2 brief shots of Willis' wife and daughter bound (Rumer Willis, Serena Scott Thomas) wrists behind and cleave-gagged with a black cloth in the back of a van. Blink n'miss. 64 minutes in, you see Michelle's bound to a wooden lawn chair (arms to the armrests) and gagged with white tape. One of the bad guys is watching her through a cctv camers. Blink n'miss. 65 minutes in, you see a about 2 minutes of the bad guy gloating, etc, while she remains tied to the chair. She is ungagged about 35 seconds in. Closeup as he peels it off. The bad guy unties her 76 minutes in, but shows us a closeup of her restraints. 83 minutes in, Bruce Willis is handed polaroids of his wife and daughter bound and gagged like in the scene at 44min. Blink n'miss. 84 minutes in, one of the bad guys ties Michelle Horn spread eagled to her bed. Guess that is what happens to girls who have a bunch of straps, belts and scarves hanging off their 4 post bed. Scene lasts about 40 seconds. He finishes tying her up (wrists are already bound, only her left leg isn't tied up at the begining of the scene), turns off the lights and leaves. 87 minutes in, another flashback to Bruce Willis' wife and daughter. Short. A couple seconds later, you see the sister franticly trying to get freed. Her little brother is cutting the straps, but manages to get only 1 wrist (and apparantly her legs) free before the bad guy comes in. She manages to escape. A fair bit of struggling in this scene. 101, 105 minutes in, Bruce's wife and daughter are shown tied-up with sacks over their heads. There apparently gagged because you hear the "mmmmphing!", but it's not shown. all times w/o commercials |
Haxan |
Day: Saturday May 31 2008 |
Time: 2 a.m. EST |
Channel: Turner Classic Movies |
Several interesting scenes with witches according to the database. This is the first time I've ever seen this film listed on TV. Early nude bondage scene. |
Record number: 4328 Title: Häxan (1922) aka Haxan aka Witchcraft Through the Ages aka The Witches aka Hecksen Medium: Movie Actress: Unknown Description: Initially a Scandinavian silent film, this film was re-released in the 60s with a voice-over by beat novelist William Burroughs and a jazzy score by Jean-Luc Ponte. It's a quasi-documentary which still packs a punch even after 80 years. There are several notable scenes. In the first a nude woman is seen from the back with her wrists chained behind her neck; in another, an accused witch with is strung up by her wrists; in a third, another accused witch is locked seated in some sort of box with holes for her head, hands and feet to stick out. |

The Mysterious Island |
Day: Saturday May 31 2008 |
Time: 4 a.m. EST |
Channel: Turner Classic Movies |
According to my listings, this is the 1929 version with Jane Daly. May be the first example of a bit gag in a mainstream film. |
Record number: 5375 Title: The Mysterious Island (1929) Medium: Movie Actress: Jacqueline Gadsden aka Jane Daly Description: Roughly around the middle somewhere, Jane is seen tied to a chair and bit-gagged with a thick piece of what looks like rubber with a rope or strap going thru it to secure it behind her head. There are several nice close-ups, and even a bit of wet area on the gag from her saliva. IMO, it's a scene you shouldn't miss...you don't often see bit gags period, let alone in a silent movie from 1929! |
