Record number: 213 Title: Four Rooms (1995) Medium: Movie Actress: Jennifer Beals, unknown Description: This movie is a sequence of four separately titled stories. Beals' scenes are in the second segment, titled "Room 404: The Wrong Man", and come in around the 25' mark (without commercials). She's shown tied to a chair and gagged with a rolled-up black cloth (possibly a sock) held in place by a thick length of white rope, cleave-with-stuffing-style. Long sequence, lasting about 10mins, with lots of closeups and mmmphing as Beals tries to communicate with the bellboy (Tim Roth) who has stumbled in on her, then scenes with her gun-toting husband, Beals (still bound and gagged) and bellboy. Played for laughs. Prior to this, about 18' in, Roth hallucinates while viewing a Klaw-type photo. The two lingeried women, one with wrists bound behind, come to life in his delusion, and there's a little light spanking. A few seconds' worth of nostalgia. |

Record number: 1124 Title: The Perils of Pauline (1947) Medium: Movie Actress: Betty Hutton Description: Somewhat comic look at silent-screen heroine Pearl White, played by Hutton. The first instance of bondage, about 20 minutes into the movie, contains a rather offensive element. Portraying White as a live actress early in her career, Hutton appears in blackface as a slave maid, running onstage to warn her master of Civil War Union forces approaching. Behind the curtain afterwards, she pulls her hands out from under her apron to reveal them bound, as a result of the clumsiness she'd shown in a previous role. About 20 minutes later, after she's been discovered by Hollywood, there's a memorable one-minute sequence of re-enacted clips from the famous serial, intercut with humorous signs for the audience. Hutton is shown lying on railroad tracks, her hands tied together in front and roped to stakes beside the rail-her ankles are tied together and apparently restrained, but to what isn't shown-struggling furiously as a locomotive rapidly bears down on her. Just before it gets there, the screen goes white, then flashes the message, "One moment please to patch film". A few seconds later, she's tied standing to a tree in a burning forest, followed by a "No Smoking" message. Next she's spreadeagled in chains-shown only from the waist up-as a rack of spikes lowers itself onto her, as a baby starts to cry on the soundtrack, which brings the message, "Will lady with crying baby please take it outside!" The sawmill episode follows, with Hutton bound to the log with rather thick rope. Just as the whirring blade starts mussing her hair, the clip ends with, "Ladies please remove your hats". Finally she's shown on her side, hands tied in front, apparently bound somehow to a vertical timber in front of her, amid cans of black powder and a case of dynamite with a fuse quickly burning down as she struggles. About ten minutes after this sequence, Hutton and her male co-star are shown filming an episode in which they're tied standing back-to-back in the basket of a balloon, but rather loosely-which comes in handy when the balloon gets away from the ground crew before the pilot can sneak aboard. Incidentally, Hutton is shown roped and cleave-gagged on the box of some video releases of this film, but is never gagged in the movie. |
