This and that and nothing in particular...
...or as firing squad leader Owen Wilson asked before proceeding to dispatch Lauren Hutton to the hereafter in "Zorro, the Gay Blade," "Do you wish for a blindfold?" To which Hutton, without missing a beat, replied, "No. The eyes of freedom will always see through the blindfolds of tyranny, and the bonds of oppression will always be broken by the muzzles of liberty."

All right, which one of you old-timers around here wrote that line?

Speaking of old-timers...I thought it might be worth noting that our precious database now has the distinction of containing scenes spanning three different centuries, given that the 1899 short "Jeanne d'Arc," which was mentioned here a while back, has been added. Okay, so it's not "Terror Among Us," but the fact that it's either the first or second oldest scene still in existence-depending upon whether the Joan of Arc film from two years earlier is still extant-merits its inclusion, in my view. Kudos to the database contributor who concurred.

You know, it's possible Thomas Edison narrowly missed becoming a contender in the first-movie-with-a-scene sweepstakes. In 1895 his laboratories had produced a filmed re-enactment of the beheading of Mary, Queen of Scots in a one-minute clip, but the execution was carried out sans bondage-and the "actress" who played the victim was really a man.

I mention this given that the 1890s were also when Edison and George Westinghouse were embroiled in their famous feud over whether direct or alternating current would be the wave of the future. Thankfully for us, of course, Westinghouse and AC won, but Edison didn't go down without a fight. He constantly preached how much more dangerous he considered AC to be, noting that it was employed in the recently invented electric chair.

If memory serves, 1899 was also the year in which the chair claimed murdering stepmother Martha M. Place of New York as its first female victim. I wonder why it didn't occur to Edison that a movie depicting her execution-replete with embellishments to horrify the audience, of course-might have served to herd the public into the DC camp. I mean, he wasn't above suggesting that this new method of meting out the death penalty ought to be referred to as "Westinghousing."

Karla
RON posted an alert for LMN airing of Karla tonight on the VCR alert.

Here is the scenes

Record number: 12634
Title: Karla (2006) aka Deadly aka Lethal Marriage
Medium: Movie
Actress: Laura Prepon, Fiona Manners, Cherilyn Hayres, Tanya Lemelle, Kristen Swieconek
Description: Grim but non-exploitative drama about Karla Homolka (Prepon), who along with her husband Paul Bernardo abused and murdered several young women between 1990 and 1992. Much wasted bondage potential, but there are a few scenes of possible interest.
9 minutes in, Manners turns up briefly as a rape victim who is handgagged by Paul while walking in the woods.
17 minutes in, Paul gives Karla's sister Tammy (Hayres) a number of drugged drinks, from which she passes out. He then orders Karla to chloroform Tammy while he opens her shirt and bra. He's filming all this with a video camera. Unfortunately, Karla uses too much chloroform, and Tammy dies.
Next, in scenes beginning 33 and 39 minutes in, a second rape victim played by Lemelle, then Tina McCarthy (Swieconek), and then Karla, all get handgagged by Paul. Just after Karla's handgag, we see Swieconek, blindfolded but unbound, while Paul films her. He orders her to open her shirt, which she does, though she manages to protect her modesty. This scene cuts away, then picks up again a few minutes later. She's wearing a skirt and is barefoot. Eventually, Karla removes her blindfold.
The last victim is played by Foret (a Katie Holmes type) in the role of Kaitlyn, whom Paul handgags and kidnaps at knifepoint 57 minutes in. Like the other victims, she is never bound.
Finally, 78 minutes in, Paul decides to punish Karla with some rough sex. She is cleave gagged while he ravishes her, and he puts a cord around her neck and nearly strangles her. It also appears that her hands are bound in front during this scene, but you need freeze-frame to see it.

Forgot my No. 1 program to record, DollHouse on Fox at 9 p.m. Would have to think Dushku will be B&G at some point.
