An entire hour of duct tape related myths and Kari Byron gets nothing?! Come on, someone throw us a bone here! |

Was it a new episode? If it was, I'd be surprised we would have anything with Kari Byron; she's 6 or 7 months pregnant when they taped this season's episodes. But yeah, I'd like to have something with Kari Byron real soon. |

I don't know if they're going to show any more; a pity if not, because it was enjoyable. Meanwhile, we have a prime candidate in Liz Bonnin of the BBC's science show "Bang Goes the Theory". She's a Franco-Irish biologist who presents articles on, among other things, human senses and faculties. I dream of her getting the treatment, strictly in the cause of science of course, at some point in the next series. |

Duct or gaffer tape comes in many weave patterns, thicknesses and degrees of stickiness. For gagging purposes, the best is thin and supple, so that it conforms to the skin. Basically, if you can clearly see the shape of the damsel's lips, it's adhering well. A piece of stiff, smooth tape with no lip impressions is a joke, and as for the backing card or paper that leaves just the ends hanging on - AAARGHH! Width can be important, too. If the tape is one of the thicker varieties, the wider it is, the less likely it is to adhere properly. Lapped strips of narrower tape will conform much better, and of course if wrapped tightly around the head it will work quite well. Mouth stuffing is essential. The best tapes are the fabric medical varieties such as Leukoplast, Elastoplast or Johnsonplast, with zinc oxide adhesive. They both conform and adhere to skin really well, being designed for the purpose. Narrow strips of vinyl insulating tape are effective, too, as long as the adhesive is strong. Even with good tape, the way it's applied makes all the difference. The scene in which the captor approaches the damsel with a strip of tape held taut and plants it over her mouth looks impressive as her lips show and her cheeks bulge out around it, but as soon as he lets go, the tape becomes featureless and there's a gap at the bottom, casting a deep shadow. Other shadows appear either side of the nose, showing the tape is not in contact there either, and very often you see wisps of hair blowing about as the damsel's exhaled breath is caught in these pockets and blown back up. If the tape is kept slack, applied first below the nose and massaged into place from the centre outwards, it's much more likely to conform better. The outer ends should curve up slightly onto the cheeks, showing that the gag is following the conical shape of the lower face. No gaps should be visible around the edges. As for the idea, so common in non-topical images and videos, that putting one strip directly on top of the first will improve the gag's effectiveness, words fail me! It just makes the whole thing stiffer and less conformal. Finally, a nice tight detective gag over the tape will make sure it sticks really well and is harder to lick off, but how often do you see that in mainstream scenes? |

Because requests for video clips belong on the Video page. That's why I MOVED it where it belonged. Where, you know, the people who can help with videos would see it. Any further questions? |

Anything happening on Eastwick yet? Missed last night's episode (but haven't heard any news so I take it no-go?) |

Thursday October 15 22:28:18 2009 TNA late alert (maybe) |
Just this second on TNA Wrestling (on Spike), uber-hot announcer Lauren Jones appears to be tied to a chair by Doctor Stevie. "Appears", cuz they did not show her face, just her back as Stevie taunted Abyss (don't ask) and you could hear what appears to be her sobbing. May be a ruse but definitely worth watching. On right now (it's 9:30 pm central right now & it's on till 11 pm Central tonite) |
