Record number: 1217 Title: The Thirty-Nine Steps (1978) aka The 39 Steps Medium: Movie Actress: Karen Dotrice Description: The bad guys are plotting to blow up Parliament. To aid their plot they kidnap a politician and his daughter. In the kidnap scene the girl is seen running away, but she is caught and chloroformed. After her chloroforming, Ms Dotrice's character is seen still unconscious in an attic or upstairs room, with hands tied above her head IIRC. No gag. Later towards the end of the film the girl is seen on a police steam launch in two scenes aboard the boat - one in motion, one moored by the Houses of Parliament. Her wrists and ankles bound and gagged with a thin white cloth over her mouth. There is quite a lot of struggling. The gag material doesn't shift as Ms D writhes about, trying to dislodge it. Her stifled "mmmphs" are interspersed with the laboured hiss of her nasal breathing as the gag distorts her face. She is wearing a long white Edwardian dress. Nice touch where the girl tries to sit up, only to be pushed down by the bad guy with his cane. a nice close-up of her face with eyes blazing above the gag. Guy alert |

A killer finds out where she’s hiding, and near the end of the movie catches up with Jo and chloroforms her from behind. She comes to in a remote cabin, where she is tied to a chair with her hands behind her back. A long conversation with the killer gives her time to work the ropes off of her hands, and she manages to stab him with a pen and run out just as the cops show up. |
