Whatever you do, don't use Avidemux--I repeat, DO NOT use Avidemux--it's absolutely terrible for H.264/MKV editing. Use MKVmerge instead. You'll have to work strictly on keyframes alone (it has no real-time preview), but it ensures accuracy and keeps everything lossless. |

However I'd really like to use a program with real-time preview, and recomendations. Does MKVmerge also support MP4? |

In all honesty, I don't know of any good H.264 editors with real-time preview. VideoReDo apparently does it, but I never got it to work (plus it's payware, so you'd need a crack). Avidemux is often said to be good, but I've tried it many times over the past few years and it never does what I want it to. As you said, the audio always goes out of sync for whatever reason. To answer your last question: MKVmerge supports editing of any H.264 stream using timecodes & strict keyframes, so that includes the MKV and MP4 containers. However, after you're done editing, you'll need to use MP4Creator to mux the video/audio streams back to MP4 if that's the native container of your original video (seeing as MKVmerge will only save as MKV). The difference between MP4 and MKV isn't really noticeable unless you look at MediaInfo; things like the bitrate can stop showing if you transcode MP4 as MKV. Yeah......... it's complicated stuff. It's taken me at least 3 years to figure it all out & I still get baffled sometimes, especially when dealing with tricky containers (or file formats, whatever you wanna call it) like FLV and MOV. |
