Thanks for the answers everyone. Sam I mostly just want to edit and back up my collection because a couple of my compilation DVDs have gotten laser-rot and thought I'd share my rarer scenes when I can. So I will lose quality just by opening the dvds in WinExporer and pulling the TS_Video folder onto my harddrive? I have editing software (Adobe) to edit out the non bondage parts and encode the edited videos into any format I choose, but it wont edit vob files until I convert them to another format first. |

Sam, thanks for the excellent job you did editing "Endure." It was fantastic. You are an all-star! A classic scene. The filmmakers did a really nice job with the continuity, too. The cleave didn't seem to change much at all throughout. |

You won't lose quality by copying the required contents of VIDEO_TS to your hard drive. The only files you need from there are the VOBs, which are usually labelled as "VTS_01_1" & "VTS_01_2" onwards (note that "VTS_01_0" is always a menu, so you definitely don't need to copy that). The reason I brought up DVD Decrypter is important, because most modern DVDs have copy-protection/scrambling stuff built into the VOBs themselves, and therefore need to be "unlocked" in order to make them playable & editable. Once DVD Decrypter is done doing that whilst copying them to your hard drive, you're then free to edit their MPEG-2 streams however you like; as in, re-encoding to Xvid/AVI (which, in addition to losing quality, significantly reduces the filesize as well) or losslessly to MPG. I'm not familiar with Adobe's video editing software, so that's why I recommended XviD4PSP because it's a very powerful tool that can open pretty much ANY format imaginable. Before that, use VideoReDo to losslessly edit out the DiD scene from the VOB and save it as MPG. Once you load that into XviD4PSP, you can do all sorts of encoding tasks, which may or may not take a long time depending on the length. Afterwards, use VirtualDub to edit the resulting AVI into a final DiD clip. It's a long-ass & irritating process, but hey--that's why I'm such a vehement opponent of encoding nowadays. To me it's an absolute no-brainer because it saves the hassle (not to mention time) of setting up a bunch of software to squash down a perfectly good raw video stream, just for the sake of saving a few megs & gigs. Hopefully one of these days people will laugh at such a notion. Now that the technical blab is over, here's something for me to consider: |
