Record number: 2337 Title: Anne of the Indies (1951) Medium: Movie Actress: Debra Paget Description: She is taken to a slave market to be sold. Her hands are chained in front with thick manacles, the chain is about a foot in length (30 cm) and she is wearing a spectacular golden ball gown dress. We see four other slaves, also with hands chained in front, being sold as she is brought in. The sale is abandoned when it is realised that her husband is sailing to her rescue and she is taken back to the pirate ship. She is tied hands behind to an upright on deck with coils of rope visible around her waist, wrist bindings not seen. Some struggling. As intended, her husband does not fire their cannon for fear of hitting her and is duly captured. The (female) Pirate Captain decides to maroon them on a small island and leave them to die slowly. They are taken in a boat to the island with their hands tied behind, she is lifted ashore from the boat and we see that her wrists are tied overlapping with elbows bent (a bit like 'Japanese style' rather than the more usual with arms straight) before they are cut free. Guy alert. No gags. All are quite short scenes and occur after 1 hour of a 1 hour 24 minute broadcast (1hr 30 minute slot) with adverts. (first scene approx 1 hour 05 minutes and last at 1 hour 11 minutes but would depend on adverts) |

Record number: 312 Title: What Ever Happened to Baby Jane? (1962) Medium: Movie Actress: Joan Crawford Description: Blanche (Crawford), who is crippled and living in the same house as her mentally unstable sister Baby Jane (Bette Davis), tries to reach the outside world by calling their family doctor for help at 1hr 28-31mins. Enraged by this, Bette viciously kicks her into unconsciousness on the floor. She then drags Blanche upstairs by her arms. At 1hr 38-39mins, housecleaner Elvira (Maidie Norman) is shocked to discover Blanche in the bedroom; she is lying on the bed, hands tied overhead to a stirrup with white rope, feet unbound (being part of her disability), and gagged with a strip of white tape. Elvira goes to help her, but fails to take heed of Blanche's frantic mmpphhing: sneaking up from behind, Bette kills her off-camera with a hammer to the head. Blanche is later shown briefly at 1hr 47mins, in darkness, while the phone rings. Cue a long sequence at 1hr 50-54mins, during which Bette pays her visit. She ungags Blanche onscreen by peeling the tape back so that it remains stuck to one cheek, then goes off on a long and crazy monologue about stuff that happened in their childhood (Jane seemingly caused her to be crippled after a car crash, some 30yrs ago). At the end of the sequence, police come calling. This prompts Jane to re-tape Blanche's mouth onscreen and go downstairs to answer the door. From hereon until 2hrs 1min, we see Blanche (having managed to ungag herself offscreen) struggling to reach for a table lamp in order to attract the attention of an unwanted house guest moseying around downstairs. In a drunken stupor, he eventually stumbles upon Blanche, but is utterly clueless on how to react. He simply runs out of the house in confusion. The scene essentially ends when Jane unties Blanche onscreen, drags her out of the bedroom and onto her wheelchair, then drives her to the beach. All in all a very slow-paced, nutty scene featuring many vivid close-ups. All times based on the Blu-ray release. |

| Julie Harris is a damsel in distress. |
|
Record number: 13690 Title: Harper (1966) Medium: Movie Actress: Julie Harris Description: This was the first appearance of the late Paul Newman as private eye Lew Harper. About an hour and forty minutes in without commercials Harris is shown being tortured to extract the location of a missing ransom payoff. She is sitting in a chair with her arms held behind by one of the baddies (it's unclear if she's bound). She is barefoot and lead bad guy Robert Webber is pricking her soles with a sharp object. His accomplice (Shelley Winters) watches grimacing as she knows how much that must hurt. Subsequently after talking tenderly (as only the real bad guys know how to) he explains how he is going to put out a lighted cigarette on her feet. This is not shown on camera but Betty screams in agony and begins to talk as the cigarette butt is pressed against her sole. She is rescued by Harper who carries her by the waist since she is unable to walk on her own feet after the torture. |
