Record number: 595 Title: Artists and Models (1955) Medium: Movie Actress: Shirley MacLaine Description: After MacLaine finishes one of her stage performances (1hr 26mins on the Cinema Classics airing; 1hr 38mins on the 2015 iTunes release), she is dragged into a dressing room and handgagged by a group of scheming men and a woman (Eva Gabor). Once inside, MacLaine mmpphhs away as they restrain her in the dark. A minute later the lights have been turned on, showing her sitting on a chair, wrists and forearms bound to the armrests with strips of white cloth, another strip encircling her waist against the backrest, feet unbound, and cleave gagged with one more cloth strip. She struggles and mmpphhs furiously as they go about stripping her of her stage outfit (a sparkly blue leotard) and give it to Gabor to wear instead; MacLaine now only wears a skimpy blue low-cut teddy (lots of cleavage on show), blue pantyhose/tights and high heels. The scene continues at 1hr 33mins (Cinema Classics)/1hr 38mins (iTunes), at which point she has knocked over the chair and is on the floor, still tightly bound to the chair and writhing around with all her might, as well as grunting with effort behind her gag. Offscreen she manages to get back up to a sitting position, move herself and the chair over to the door, then use her mouth (still with the gag between her teeth) to turn the doorknob. As the door opens she bounces out of the room on the chair, and is discovered by a man and woman who untie her. When the man ungags her, she is majorly pissed off and whines "Where's that dame?! She stole my clothes!" One of the most energetic damsel performances you'll ever see! Total scene time is about 35secs. Besides the initial handgagging/capture sequence, the lighting is excellent; typically bright and vibrant for that time period. We see mainly full-body views of MacLaine during her struggles (including lingering, gratuitous views of her teddy-clad butt); the only proper close-up occurs when she is ungagged. |
