Whatever Happened to Baby Jane
Day: Monday May 22 2017
Time: 8:00 PM Eastern
Channel: TCM
Record number: 312

Title: What Ever Happened to Baby Jane? (1962)
Medium: Movie
Actress: Joan Crawford

Description: Blanche (Crawford), who is crippled and living in the same house as her mentally unstable sister Baby Jane (Bette Davis), tries to reach the outside world by calling their family doctor for help at 1hr 28-31mins. Enraged by this, Bette viciously kicks her into unconsciousness on the floor. She then drags Blanche upstairs by her arms.

At 1hr 38-39mins, housecleaner Elvira (Maidie Norman) is shocked to discover Blanche in the bedroom; she is lying on the bed, hands tied overhead to a stirrup with white rope, feet unbound (being part of her disability), and gagged with a strip of white tape. Elvira goes to help her, but fails to take heed of Blanche's frantic mmpphhing: sneaking up from behind, Bette kills her off-camera with a hammer to the head.

Blanche is later shown briefly at 1hr 47mins, in darkness, while the phone rings. Cue a long sequence at 1hr 50-54mins, during which Bette pays her visit. She ungags Blanche onscreen by peeling the tape back so that it remains stuck to one cheek, then goes off on a long and crazy monologue about stuff that happened in their childhood (Jane seemingly caused her to be crippled after a car crash, some 30yrs ago).

At the end of the sequence, police come calling. This prompts Jane to re-tape Blanche's mouth onscreen and go downstairs to answer the door. From hereon until 2hrs 1min, we see Blanche (having managed to ungag herself offscreen) struggling to reach for a table lamp in order to attract the attention of an unwanted house guest moseying around downstairs. In a drunken stupor, he eventually stumbles upon Blanche, but is utterly clueless on how to react. He simply runs out of the house in confusion.

The scene essentially ends when Jane unties Blanche onscreen, drags her out of the bedroom and onto her wheelchair, then drives her to the beach. All in all a very slow-paced, nutty scene featuring many vivid close-ups.

All times based on the Blu-ray release.

Die Die My Darling
Day: Monday May 22 2017
Time: 10:30 PM Eastern
Channel: TCM
Record number: 204

Title: Fanatic (1965) aka Die! Die! My Darling!
Medium: Movie
Actress: Stefanie Powers

Description: Held prisoner by her dead fiance's mother, Ms. Powers is bound and gagged with a thick woolen cleave. She tries to alert someone at the door by thumping down a staircase. In the last twenty minutes or so (without commercials).

Prior to this, but still in the second half, she's the recipient of a relatively lengthy handgag.

Right before the gagged scene, Stefanie Powers gets another handgag as she is trying to explain to one of her captors that her cohort, assisting in getting the bonds on Ms. Powers, killed her husband. The woman slaps a handgag on firmly and yells to the other lady, "Gag and bind her!" The gagged scene is an over the mouth detective gag which turns into a cleave gag as the scenes unfold and presumably from Ms. Powers struggles. Just as her fiance is leaving, Ms. Powers works her gag off and screams "ALLEN!!!" but alas it is too late.

Mission Impossible
Day: Monday May 22 2017
Time: 2:00 AM Eastern
Channel: Decades
Record number: 2

Title: Mission: Impossible (1966)
Medium: TV Series
Actress: Elizabeth Ashley

Description: Episode: "The Question" (7.16)

One of the all-time great scenes begins as the IMF tries to determine if an assassin (Varsi) is really a defector, or is only pretending to be after being arrested. The team fakes an attack on the apartment where the assassin is being held, and kidnaps him from the agents who had been holding him. They take him to an abandoned winery where he is interrogated by Jim Phelps, and is allowed a look at another prisoner – IMF Agent Andrea (Elizabeth). Varsi now claims to have been lying about wanting to defect, so Jim tells him he must prove it – by killing Andrea. She is walked into the room where he is being held with her hands tied behind her back and is forced to her knees. She is wearing a patterned blouse and slit orange skirt. The assassin is handed a gun and told to kill her. He points it at the back of her head as she acts petrified and says “sorry” when he pulls the trigger. She gives a convincing sigh of relief as the gun clicks harmlessly. She is then pulled to her feet and marched out of the room, giving a nice view of her tied wrists as she is turned around.

As the testing continues, Varsi is permitted to continue his mission, and takes Andrea along, ostensibly so that she can be framed for his assigned murder. He easily eludes IMF surveillance, and takes Andrea to an apartment from which he can carry out the murder. She is now wearing a white blouse and jeans, and sits with her hands taped behind her back and her ankles taped together. They talk as she watches him prepare his weapon. As he is expecting his contact to show up, he picks her up in his arms and carries her into the bedroom. Warning her to be quiet or his contact will kill her immediately, he cleave gags her with a white handkerchief. Left alone in the bedroom, she squirms off the bed and over to the phone, where she dials the crew and taps in a message (remember that pesky gag), then wriggles her way back onto the bed just before he returns. There are several good close-ups on her face as she taps morse code into the telephone receiver.

When the contact shows up, Varsi finally shows his true colors by announcing that he wants to defect and turn in the contact, but the contact was expecting the double cross and shoots him. He then searches the apartment to find Andrea in the other room. He carries her back into the living room sans gag, puts her in a chair and unties her. He orders her to tape up Varsi, and then is retied herself (off camera). The contact prepares to go ahead with the assassination at the government building across the street, and leave Varsi as the fall guy. Jim spots the gun barrel and climbs up while Varsi and Andrea manage to knock over a table, distracting Nelson so Jim can burst in and disarm Nelson.
