[6310] Dr Terrible's House of Horrible
Present entry:

Record number: 6310
Title: Dr Terrible's House of Horrible
Medium: TV Series
Actress: Melanie Gutteridge
Description: Episode: "Frenzy of Tongs"
This is a knowing British spoof of a spoof (Dr Terror's House of Horrors) of the kind of movie that was never very serious in the first place.
Gorgeous golden-haired Elizabeth (Gutteridge, looking every inch the classic adventure series heroine) is held hostage by Chinese megalomaniac Hang Man Chan. The foppish sleuth Nathan Blaze (Steve Coogan) tracks her to Chan's underground lair, to find her tied standing with arms spread to rings in the wall. Liz says, "I am afraid you find me in heavy bondage", to which Blaze repies, "This is better than I could ever have hoped for . . . harrumph . . . finding you alive, I mean." As he releases her, Blaze is himself captured, and Elizabeth is moved to another location.
Having escaped, Blaze next finds Liz in a similar predicament, about to be eaten by a giant crab in the sewers of London. This time, she says, perfectly calmly, "You find me bound and hysterical." Blaze repies, "Fear not; I am a qualified doctor of the mind." After a moment's pause, he slaps her face, and she says, "Thank you." As he starts to release her, standing very close, she says, "Is something stirring down there?" "Oh, yes" replies Blaze. "No, in the water!" says Liz.
Having killed the crab, Blaze picks Liz up. She says, I can run", but Blaze answers, "No, this will be quicker" as he staggers off under her weight.
Sadly, no gag in either scene,

Note to the Editor: This scene is a gem, as is the description in the present entry. Therefore I will hate to suggest changes; only I was lucky enough to tape the ep, and though the entry captures the style and feel beautifully, the dialogue is not accurate, and only 2 of the 4 (or five if you includes a net catching) are there.

Below I suggest another description. If nothing else, it is much more accurate.

PS There's another ep with a scene in the series; I will make a new entry tomorrow.

Suggestion:

Title: Dr. Terrible's House of Horrible (2001)
Medium: TV series
Actress: Melanie Gutteridge, Lourdes Faberes
Description: Episode: "Frenzy of Tongs" (1.2)

This is a knowing British spoof of a spoof (Dr Terror's House of Horrors) of the kind of movie that was never very serious in the first place. Additionally, each episode of the series is a parody of a horror movie or a category of same.

This episode is a parody of the Fu Manchu movies, where Hang Man Chang is Dr Fu Manchu.

Gorgeous golden-haired Elizabeth (Gutteridge, looking every inch the classic adventure series heroine, dressed in a long pink silk skirt, a pink silk blouse unbottoned in front showing her white teddy-like 19th century underwear, and overacting her Damsel in Distress part in the most delightful way- eyes wide open, fearful facial expressions etc.) is at first captured by Hang Man Chang's minions in a London street: they throw a big net over her. She looks up, sees Hang Man Chang, and screams.

The foppish sleuth Nathan Blaze (Steve Coogan) then tracks her to Chan's underground lair, to find her standing with arms manacled and chained to rings in the wall. (Upper spreadeagle).

Liz: "Mr. Blaze, thank God! I am afraid you find me in heavy bondage."

Blaze: "This is MUCH more than I had hoped for!"

Liz (looks puzzled)

Blaze: "To find you alive"

(Liz smiles, relieved)

Blaze: "Do not be alarmed. The end of my rod is about to glow red."

(His walking stick apparently functions as a blowtorch with which he cuts the chains holding Liz's left arm. Before he can continue he is captured).

Liz is moved to another location. Here she is strapped down to a table, hands and feet, with leather straps, while Hang Man Chang's henchman threatens her with a razor. No dialogue, but some nice facial expressions.

Having escaped, Blaze and his helper captures Hang Man Changs daughter Woo Woo. They search the London sewers (where a giant crab is at large), Blaze having chained Woo Woo to himself (one wrist to another). Woo Woo slips and falls in the water, which is stirring.

Blaze: "Do not drown. Now give me your hand."
(pulls the chain; only Woo Woo's cut-off hand follows)

Blaze's helper: "Seems the hand has been disconnected"

Blaze: "Apparently" (tosses the hand in the water.

Meanwhile poor Lis has been tied in the sewers, another standing spreadeagle, this time with rope commected to rings. She looks like she is about to panic when she sees something in the mist. She struggles desperately with her ropes:

"Who is that? Why are you moving sideways?"

Blaze arrives. Liz, now much calmer: "Mr Blaze. I am afraid you find me bound and hysterical"

Blaze: "You forget that I am a fully qualified mental doctor". After a moment (Liz looks perfectly calm now) he slaps her face. "That better?"

Standing very close to the heroine, Blaze now begins to untie her slowly. He can see her, but she can see the water.

Liz: "I think there's something stirring down there"

Blaze: "I know. Are you wet?"

Liz: "Oh my God, the size of it!"

Blaze (pleased) "Yees!.......Uhhh (hears a sound, turns and sees the crab)

Blaze finishes untying her, then lifts her up and carries her on his shoulder.

Liz: "I can run."

Blaze" There isn't time"

It all ends well, after a fight where Liz faints Blaze triumphs and gets a large amount od crab meat.

I am sorry for the typos ("commected to rings") for example- as usual I act too fast.
