| I just ordered Fliper Season 1 on DVD. I want to clip Jessica Alba's scenes. I was wondering what is the best quality compression to use on the clips? I usualy just rip the the disc with DVD Decrepter, use DVD2AVI and then edit with VirtualDub and DivX. |

It's outdated by at least 6 years. Xvid is the current standard for encoding AVI files, and even then is likely to soon make way for H.264 (which is currently the standard for HD encodes). Stick with Xvid for any non-HD stuff and you'll be fine. For video compression, make sure the bitrate is set reasonably high so as to avoid pixellation. Many people skimp on this and end up with shitty encodes. The best recommendation is 1000Kb/s. It's a good trade-off between quality and filesize. Sound-wise, use MP3 at 128Kb/s CBR 48000Hz. Don't use OGG, AC-3, AAC or anything else. Framerate will normally be detected and dealt with automatically, but just so you know the most common ones are 23.98fps, 25fps and 29.97fps (often rounded up to 30fps, but for the sake of accuracy don't go changing it unless it's actually STATED to be at 30fps) For aspect ratios--and this is really important--use these dimensions and crop any prominent black bars on the sides or top/bottom to clean things up: 4:3 = 512x384 (most TV shows that are more than 5 years old) 3:2 (not often encountered) = 560x368 16:9 = 624x352 (most TV shows over the past decade use this) 1:85 = 640x352 (most movies use this) 2:35 = 650x272 (also used by most movies) Another important thing to remember is that when using VirtualDub for editing, DO NOT re-encode when you save! Go to Video > Direct stream copy and it'll allow you to crop your video (using keyframes, abbreviated as "K" below the seek bar) without re-compressing anything. Again, people often fail to realise this, which is a real shame. What program do I use to make encodes? I've sworn by XviD4PSP for a while now. It can encode anything to anything: |

One problem I have with virtualdub is when making a bunch of cuts and using direct stream, the saved file doesn't always to be be the same length. Lets say I cut ten seconds of the bigging of a clip, it may only end up with 5 seconds cut. Any reason for this? |
