Record number: 377 Title: Thoroughly Modern Millie (1967) Medium: Movie Actress: Julie Andrews, Mary Tyler Moore, multiple unknowns Description: In a scene near the end, beginning at 2hr 4mins, perhaps a dozen extras portraying kidnapped victims of a white slavery ring (the film is a musical set in the 1920s) are shown bound and gagged in various positions in cages, awaiting shipment overseas. Their hands are all tied with green rope; some behind their backs, some in front, others with arms overhead, sitting, standing, and at least one has her feet tied. They are also each cleave gagged with a thick white cloth. Lots of helpless mmpphhing and some squirming. Title character Millie (Andrews), in search of her missing friend Dorothy (Moore), comes upon the fireworks warehouse where the women are being held. In the chaos that follows her setting off the fireworks, she frees and ungags one woman standing with her hands tied around a bar in front of her cage, then another sitting on a bed with her hands tied overhead. Neither Millie nor Dorothy get proper scenes, although each do get at least something of note. At 31mins, Millie places a pencil between her teeth and does a swingin' dance around her office, for one of those "faux gag" moments. In the middle of the multi-damsel sequences, at 2hrs 7mins, Dorothy makes an emergency phone call from the adjacent opium den, only to be surprised from behind and briefly handgagged. Right at the start of the film, at 2mins, the criminal ringleader Mrs. Meers (Beatrice Lillie) sneaks up behind one of the girls and chloroforms her with a white cloth.
