| To DOC: I explained this strange habit of mine to ZHUGE40 a while ago over on lazoslatinos: I like those telenovelas the most which take place in areas which have those stereotypical "Latin" looks which come to most foreigner's minds when thinking of Latin America! I need a deep blue sky, shining sun, jungle/rainforest, beach etc. Equally valid are nice urban areas blazing in the sun (lavish apartments, well-lit offices etc). It is also of crucial importance to me that the people are smartly dressed according to the climatic conditions (tops + tight jeans, colorful summer dresses, smart suits, high heels etc). To sum it up: The scene should have the looks of an Acapulco vacation brochure! However, not every region of Latin America is blessed with these looks: Peru and Chile on the Pacific coast tend to be either foogy and cool (with pale grey sky) or dry and barren; tropical vegetation is almost non-existent, desert and alpine conditions prevail; people have to dress rather warm accordingly; in part this is also true of Argentina and Colombia: in long-running telenovelas/series such as "Son Amores" or "Tu Voz Estereo" you will easily find out which capitulos were produced during the cold months and which were produced during summer! Finally I like the typical "Mexican" telenovela style: A lot of romance, a little humour, a sprinkle of action, some 100-200 capitulos in length - predictable and reliable! Colombian telenovelas of this style were once among the most celebrated, but througout the last years they have started to produce more and more ultra-violent dealer-novelas. Surely there is a market for this stuff, especially among males... But I think that most people (not only women) watch telenovelas because they try to ESCAPE the grim every-day-reality of their lifes; they want to DREAM! I hope that this looong statement of mine is not too much off-topic! |
