[22786] Better Watch Out (2017) aka Safe Neighborhood
The film was widely released in 2017, but was originally released in 2016.

It wasn't released in 2016. It was shown at some festivals and conventions, presumably to get backing for a wide release, and actually released in 2017.

IMDB says 2016. Isn't that our reference source for
that sort of thing?

Semi-reference, but not when the festival & mainstream release years are different. Better Watch Out was still on the festival circuit in 2016, and only in 2017 was it released in mainstream formats such as VOD, DVD, etc.

Sam and I actually had a similar discussion on dates a few months back. The decision back then was to go with the general release date, and ignore the festival dates. I don't recall you taking a position on it at the time. If you want to set a different standard, we can.

I dunno, seems easier to use the IMDB, but if you have a policy then I'm not going to override. The main function of the date is to differentiate same title entries.

BTW, if you think that I scrutinize every post and weigh the ramifications, prepare to be disappointed.

If it doesn't look like something that needs moderation I often skim and go. Something really needs to catch my attention.

No, as you say, I don't find the dates particularly important except to differentiate between identical titles. I think the reason it came up last time was because somebody wanted to change something that had already been switched the other way. We don't need to duplicate IMDB here, and the important thing is to describe the scene and have a way to identify where it came from. If somebody wants to know the history of the film's release schedule, they can go to IMDB and read all they want.
