As the revolutionaries rapidly gain ground - to the catchcry, "Viva Maria!" - the rulers are in a panic. Eventually the church steps in and, using subterfuge (not unusual!), the clerics manage to waylay the two Marias and they end up in a torture chamber. When we first see them as prisoners they are both wearing smart black blindfolds and cloth gags. Soon the blindfolds are removed and the pair strapped and/or chained down (barefoot) on torture benches, with suitable head clamps and the works.
