| Nice find there Pantera! Cheek-bulgingly good big otm there. I know that cleave gags were frowned upon during the 'Hays Code' era, but that did lead to a classic era of great big otm's and wide-eyed damsels. Which informed a lot of 'our' tastes. Especially if you grew up watching reruns of these old films on tv in the Seventies & Eighties :). |

There are some pre-1950 cleave gags, some pretty tight and/or thick. I find it hard to believe the code would crack down on some movies and not others, especially when you had actresses such as Katherine DeMille, adopted daughter of Cecil B. getting a pretty good cleave gag, as well as Virginia Mayo and Dale Evans. From 1930-1950, there are close to 30 cleave gag entries in the DB, including Jane Russell's in The Outlaw (which flaunted the Code in regards to Jane's physical appeal). Who knows what's not even in the DB? To me, it always was because those old Western magazine serials depicted women with OTMs, which are easier to draw. I really doubt Code enforcers were going, 'Oh no, make this gag over the mouth because men will go wild in theaters if this is tied between her lips.' Especially when you see what Hitchcock did to Maureen O'Hara and looking at the gags Marguerite Churchill in Man Hunt, Marjorie Weaver had in Man At Large and even Googie Withers getting gagged with her own stockings in Strange Boarders. |

| Very educational post about cleaves in ye olden filme days! Have seen Jamaica Inn of course that is such an amazing scene. But other titles are unfamiliar(The Outlaw aside). Shall track them down. The so-called Hays Code ban on cleaves whether true or not makes for an amusing tale of cinematic repression lol |

Cleave gags, while not explicitly prohibited, were discouraged because they evoked male lust more than ordinary over-thr-mouth gags? |

Jane, Tarzan's wife, represented the height of permissible sexuality (a bare shoulder, the length of her skirt, ò strictly covered navel...) while characters like Betty Boop disappeared because they were "too explicit." The cleave gag was considered "sexually explicit", obviously for women.... |

Found by our friend JackD over on the tube, we have a cleave scene in the next episode of Canim Annem and then a tape gag scene for the next episode of Hicran.
