| This will probably date me quite a bit, but I was recently reflecting on my and remembered this important moment in my interest in damsels in distress at a young age. This one is a bit unusual. For those unfamiliar, Thundercats was an 80s cartoon about a group of catlike humanoids taking on a villainous mummy (Points for creativity). Most importantly for this post, the main female character was Cheetara, who relied on super speed. Her outfit and appearance made some folks back then wonder why the hell they were attacked to a feline woman. Anyhoo.one of my first memories an episode called Safari Joe, where a hunter used The Thundercats weaknesses against them. For Cheetara, this meant neutralizing her speed. The scene in question starts with Cheetara pushing a comrade out of the way as Joe fires a shot. However, she doesn't realize he fired a rocket shackle. There's a nice close up of her prone foot (She's lying on the ground) as the shackle clamps onto her ankle. It shoots her into the sky as Joe fires three more shots, leading to more good close ups of her free ankle and wrists getting manacled (Theres a nice moment where her hands writhe as the manacles attach). She eventually ends up in a floating in the air in spreadeagle position. For a young kid with a burgeoning interest in restrained damsels, this was mind blowing. Now it's not perfect: Animation isn't the best, specifically her face which remains somewhat static and she only lets out one startled grunt as she is dragged into the air. Also, she is simply kept in a cage the rest of her captivity and for the gag snobs out there, she is never gagged. But looking back there were so many factors I absolutely adore now. An ankle grab leading to a capture (Super rare). Close up of ankle restraints. And a gloating villain.Safari Joe yells "Try running now!" or something to that effect. I'm probably making this scene sound so much better than it actually is, with my nostalgic rose colored glasses. You can see for yourself, the show is pretty much available anywhere, season 1, episode 23. Anyone else have unusual starts to their interest? Or maybe remember this one? |
