| The description is misleading in several regards (including the title, 'Emerald Jungle', which isn't listed by IMDb, although it is by one or two other sites; does Brian's database use precedence?), it lacks events and actresses, and the Tag list is incomplete. I suggest therefore: Title: Eaten Alive (1980) aka Doomed to Die aka Mangiati Vivi aka Emerald Jungle Actress: Janet Agren, Paola Senatore, Me Me Lai aka Meme Lai aka Me Me Lay, Michele Schmiegelm Description: Diana Morris (Paola Senatore) has gone missing, "mixed up with a group of crazies", according to her landlady. Film footage of her on an expedition to South-East Asia turns up in the pocket of a killer who was knocked down and killed by a truck on the streets of New York. (Warning: the footage includes a couple of guys who, in a ceremony, have their backs pierced with hooks and who are suspended, happily, from a frame.) The killer is a member of a Christian cult whose home, Purification Village (where the Stars and Stripes flies), is deep in the jungle of New Guinea. Diana's sister, Sheila Morris (Janet Agren), goes to search for her, enlisting the services of an American expat guy shortly after she lands. 28': We are in the jungle. A young mother (Michele Schmiegelm) and son have stopped to eat when about four cannibals find them. The two try to make a run for it, and the boy seems to escape, but the mother is stripped of her wrap-dress, pushed to he ground and raped. She is barefoot. Her screams attract Sheila and the expat guy. He arrives at a vantage point a little ahead of her and is repulsed by what he sees. Diana arrives and emits a half-scream as she is hand-gagged by the guy to try to keep her quiet. He also pulls her down behind the foliage. A cannibal stops eating at the sound, but then sees an owl, and takes it to be what he heard. [Warning: a male cannibal is hustled to a location where other cannibals are present. He is held against a rock formation, and the leader delivers a most-painful punishment, before the other cannibals pile in. Because this is a mainstream movie (BBFC 18 version to hand), we don't see everything we might, but the uncut (!) version may show the graphic detail.] 58': Sheila is being prepared for an 'inspection' by the cult leader, and for it, she is naked and being painted gold by one of three female assistants, who are all in native semi-dress. She is kneeling on her haunches on her bed, unrestrained (but she is drugged and docile), with her hands placed demurely across her crotch. He arrives, and is just about to make his inspection, when Diana appears and tries to assassinate him. He overcomes her, throws her to the floor and starts to whip her. She is dressed in a pale blue blouse, unbuttoned, but tied at the waist, daisy dukes and calf-length leather boots. He stops whipping when one of his men enters with news. Sheila gazes at the incident uncaring; her drug is a substance which makes her loyal to the cult leader. 66': It's night, and Diana, Mowara (Me Me Lai, now a reluctant member of the cult, and a trusted 'native guide' - barefoot, in a loincloth, beaded necklaces, and a beaded and toothed choker) and the expat guy arrive at Sheila's hut to take her away to safety, but she has been drugged again, and so resists their entreaties, becoming vocal: "I belong to Jonas!" In her best interests, the guy slaps her across the face with the back of his hand to stop her shouting, and grabs a length of clean, white fabric (handy!) with which to gag her OTM. She mmmphs and whimpers at this, and continues as Mowara takes a length of rope to tie her hands behind her back. She is almost silent by the time the trio lead her out of the hut. She is wearing an understandably-grubby, long-legged safari suit and boots. Cut to the next morning. The quartet is making its way through the jungle to a hidden canoe, to complete the escape. There's a lovely close-up of Sheila, gagged and docile. Moments later, she sinks to her knees, and Diana thinks the drug may have worn off. She suggests that Sheila be released, and the guy agrees. The two of them raise Sheila to her feet and free her (68') - the fools! Sheila screams and runs off, chased by the guy. 69': Mowara and Diana go to hide, but are found and captured by some of Jonas's followers. It is implied that Diana is manually restrained while being taken from behind by at least one of them. In the process, she is without her blouse, screaming and resisting. Mowara is also held, on her knees, with a knife at her throat. But redemption, of a sort, arrives - cannibals! 71': Sheila and the guy hear Diana's screams, and go to find her. The cult followers (and probably Mowara) have been vanquished and savaged by the cannibals, and the guy sees that Diana is now supine and naked but for her boots, restrained by the arms by two cannibals, while a third, who is above her head, raises a knife and lifts her chin to slice her throat. Sheila comes to the guy's side, and sees what is happening, but before she can scream, he delivers a KO punch to her jaw to silence her. He hauls her away from the immediate location, and she comes to a short while later. Times derived from BBFC 18 (UK DVD) version; other versions may show more/ different scenes, including some in the film found in New York, and the deaths of Mowara and Diana. The only change I made was to swap the position of "Emerald Jungle" and "Eaten Alive" in the title line. There's another classic movie called Eaten Alive, and people familiar with this one know the Emerald Jungle title., |
