| The Crimson Cult (1968) -with a little more warning |

Actress: Vivienne Carlton, Virginia Wetherell Description: Boris Karloff's last film, with Carlton as a sacrifice victim in its first scene. She's shown nude (this is only implied), lying on her back, ungagged and shackled in a narrow spreadeagle on an altar as she is apparently whipped, as implied by the sound effects and close-up shots of her face as she writhes and screams. Later, there are what appear to be whip marks on her hips and thighs-these appear in wide shots with other people standing between her and the camera-as she is killed with a dagger by a new initiate to the cult. (Some sources report this scene, along with others, is more explicit in the original cut of the film.) Near the end of the movie, Wetherell, playing a descendent of the cult's leader-a witch burned three centuries before-ends up chained to the same altar with her arms at her sides and a shackle around her neck, also ungagged, but fully clothed unlike the first victim. A well-placed gunshot from Karloff's character saves her from a similar fate. |
