Record number: 617 Title: The Black Swan (1942) Medium: Movie Actress: Maureen O'Hara, Unknown Description: Two young women in nightgowns are seized during a pirate raid on their town at the beginning of this film. They are carried bound across the pirates' shoulders. At the shore they are deposited on the beach where they are laid on their backs among the loot. They struggle and one refuses to drink wine. They are rescued. Later, Maureen O'Hara is abducted by a pirate suitor. She is forced into a carriage while gagged with her own shawl. From the position of her arms it seems they are bound and her legs probably are too. In the final sequence, after she is forced to masquerade as her abductor's wife, another pirate seizes her as a hostage. Since she is seized from bed, she is wearing a nightgown. She is tied in a cabin with her hands behind her, her bindings also being fastened to some piece of furniture. She struggles mightily. |

Record number: 1953 Title: Pony Soldier (1952) Medium: Movie Actress: Penny Edwards Description: Emerald Neeley (Ms. Edwards) is captured by Crees, along with a man. Around the 25' mark (in the AMC airing I saw), she's shown being freed by hero Tyrone Power. She's inside a tent at the camp. The scene is very brief. She's bitgagged, and Power is just cutting her wrist bonds behind her back when the cut is made to the tent. She removes the gag, and that's pretty much it. Later, about 70' in, recalcitrant members of the Cree nation grab her again and whisk her off. We see her again bitgagged (appearing to be made of leather, secured by thongs or cords wrapped around the ends) and bound wrists behind. After a long march, they bind her ankles over her flowing skirt, and build a fire to immolate her. Power, a Cree chief, and a Cree boy save the day. This scene runs about six minutes. |

Record number: 9208 Title: Hip Hopera: Carmen (2001) Medium: TV Movie Actress: Beyonce Knowles Description: She's the title character, of course; cop Mekhi Phifer is the good man she takes down with her in this Bizet-inspired rap musical. The arrest-after-the-catfight scene is about twelve minutes in. Phifer whips out the handcuffs, but is never shown clicking them on, nor are they ever actually shown on Knowles' wrists. Nonetheless, she does spend the next few minutes rather convincingly acting as if they are, especially when she tries showing Phifer a ring on one of her fingers while in the back seat of the patrol car, describing it as a family heirloom and pleading with him to stop at her house so she can leave it there rather than have it taken from her at the jail. |
