Medium: Movie Actress: Maureen O'Hara Description: This is probably the version of the story in which Esmeralda spends the most time in bondage. O'Hara portrays her sitting with her hands tied behind her back throughout the trial, both before and after the torture scene, which is depicted in a wide shot from above in a rather non-explicit manner. At the end of the trial, the king visits the courtroom, and orders her untied so he can perform a trial by ordeal on her. He blindfolds her and asks her to choose between her alleged murder weapon and his dagger on a table before her. She touches her own knife, failing the test, and later is carted to the scaffold and mounts it with her hands tied behind her back, but they are untied when Quasimodo (Charles Laughton) swings down from above in the famous rescue scene. |
